1998 V70 GLT Dead Lifter? Bent Rod?

Post by MoparWade »

This seems to come up often on the forums but I figured I would give my exact info to see what everyone thinks. I have an occasional ticking that seems to only come up after I have really gotten on the throttle. It usually goes away after a couple of days but sometimes it takes a week or so. About 5 days ago I had this occur again and the tick was really quiet, like you had to be parked in a quiet area with something next to the car to allow the sound to echo back. Then 2 days ago I got on the throttle hard again and now the ticking is considerably louder. I should also mention that I had a couple of misses when I got on it last time which may or may not be related. The ticking is definitely RPM dependant and does not flutter if the accelerator is feathered. I would say it is just a bit quieter than the noise you get when the oil has drained out of lifters on startup but it's hard to say for sure because this sounds like a single lifter. Oil isn't old but it isn't new either, have not done the o-rings in oil pan but I would think that would effect all the lifters. So, any thought's? Could it be a bent rod? I should also say that I am running 17psi but Lucky at ARD did the tune and I'm pretty sure that he programs them so that there is no way to build enough boost at low RPM to bend a rod.

A rod will knock on transition from float to load (or other way) but not continuously. I would say lifter. Change that oil, see if it changes. Maybe stay off that boost, too??

The knock from bent rod is not at all like a rod bearing noise. It does sound like excess valve clearance but is twice as fast since tappet noise is 1/2 crank speed for a single tappet. The piston knock from a bent rod will subside if the twist is not too bad as the spot on piston will wear.
I bent some rods in my 98 and I thought it was a tappet noise until I listened more. It subsided and then I drove it hard and it came back louder.
Do you have any wastegate adjustments made on the car?

Just what you wanted to hear.
