Volvo Repair Database New ETM dead out of box:

Post by precopster »

Just when I thought I had seen all of the different and varied faults on ETMs I get this one to program. A brand new 8644344 for a non turbo P2 S60 or V70.

Built in week 3 of 2014 and as shiny as the day it rolled off the production line.

Usually a new ETM can be checked in the Software-Advanced tab before programming takes place. It can't be programmed because it can't be seen by Vida and never will be.

It's contact sensors and body can be re-used but the circuit board will be thrown away.

It would have been nice of Magnetti Marelli to weld the block terminal together in January of 2014. Also they neglegted to use heat conductive paste for the circuit board. Second photo shows the 2 surfaces clean as a whistle. Guess they had more important things to do on that day  A little solder, some conductive paste and some TLC and off she goes.

Hello Mike,

I tried to reach you by PM, but it seems i cant not use the function. I got your details from a common friend from the forum who has been helping me with my ETM. He adviced me to contact you.

I also did buy a brand new Volvo factory re-build ETM. The car runs with it for 5-25 minutes, after that starts spitting out. Quick diagnosis proves that at least the terminating resistor is not connected anymore. Let the ETM stand for a while and it is back. So it goes off bus after a while. Is it possible Volvo will not take this part back, as there is no way this damage can be done with the vehicle.

And also can you tell me how is the terminating resistor connected, is it a component in the circuit board? It would seem it is a bad junction in the board. Can you advice me how to take the ETM apart, if Volvo does not agree to take it back?

Thank you, Best Regards

If you lose connection it could be the terminal block as in my photo above. The wires can be pulled by mechanics pulling the connector wire when removing the ETM. Heat can affect the connection after some time running the engine if there is a bad connection. Remove the aluminium plate and remove the green putty with a pick tool in the centre where the wire enters the board. If you have a bad connection that is the first place to look.

Of course it would be best to have a Volvo dealer diagnose the car first as this is the only way to claim on a parts warranty. Once you tamper with a part Volvo or anyone else will not honour a warranty.

Thank you for your advice and time,

It seems i have the same problem. I removed the putty and the terminals were connected together, but 5 of the 6 were holding on just by thought, a slight nudge and they all broke loose, all except one. I guess this is how yours was as well?

What kind of method did you use to re-connect them, just normal soldering?
Can i inspect the back of the PCB assembly for the missing conductive paste without removing anything else, like the sides like in your picture?
Is hot-glue a good option to fill the terminal once it is fixed?

Sorry I missed your post. Hot glue will break down I'm time. Every time you run the engine it will melt.

Did you have the terminal block re-soldered and is it now working?

I just saw another throttle built in 2015 with the same issue last week. Must have been a production run issue with the last of the new ETMs.
