1999 S80 DIM, ECU, LSM or CEM error?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 S80 DIM, ECU, LSM or CEM error?

Post by Mistwalker »

Hi!
I've been watching the forums for aprox 6 months, never had to register, because I know how to read and search a forum ;) I managed a DIY repair to the ETM with a contactless sensor 6 months ago - yaaay! :D

First things first, symptoms:
- Can't lock high/full/upper beam.
- Lower left LCD is very dim.
- Sometimes It takes 10-15 seconds before the dashboard lights turn on after igniton.
- No lights under my automatic gearbox gear indicators.
- Extremely dim lights around my AC.
- LSM does not work, small green light doesn't even work.
- Left position light doesn't work sometimes.
- Specific Bubls, actually I think it's just one, (I've upgraded them all to LED) in my DIM (Driver Information Module) sometimes goes dim, and then comes back in a few secs. The time interval is very random on this.

Things that works, but is very often not working when there's a DIM error:
- Clock
- SRS Icon
- Turn signals
- Flickering lights

Things I've tried:
- Checked all fuses in both enigine bay and at the drivers side.
- Disconnect and re-connect battery with at least 5-10mins disconnection.
- Try a new (actually used) LSM switch.
- Some kind of reset where you lock and unlock your doors 5 times.

So, it seems that I got a lot of stuff not being typical DIM problems?

Background story

Two weeks ago I got a weird error, which I through a couple of google searches narrowed down to be a LSM (Light Switch Module) error. I ordered a used one - didn't resolve my problems :(
So, I thought I would check if the new LSM was working and found out that if the CEM (Central Electronic Module) is working, I should get voltage through the ground and the, on my car, red wire (green and white is CANBUS as most of you already know), and I did. Something around 11V when turned on. So, I got voltage, but not a working LSM. Happy days, exchange LSM and it should work, right? No. The new LSM didn't change anything.

What's happening?

And here's the weird stuff. I tried to measure voltage between CANBUS and red/ground. I actually heard a very very low noise when measuring, just if I could somehow hear some kind of signal. As soon as I stopped measuring between red (plus/+ I think) and the CANBUS (twisted green/white) the noise stopped, and it came back when I started measuring between them again.

Anyway, after that I plug in my new LSM which I think is broke, but hey! It lights up! It's just that it at one state all the leds inside it was lit, except for the little green one that indicates if it's turned on or not. And after a while it starts blinking. "WTF?" I think. Why the hell does the lights that lights up the buttons on the LSM blink? It doesn't matter if I turn the ignition off and pull out the key, they continue to blink!

I tried to disconnect battery. Waited for at least 5min with the minus/- pole disconnected, but it continues to blink when reconnecting. Also, my old LSM does not do this, only the new one. So my old LSM seems to be broken?

So, I thought this is some really weird shit, and I should check for fault codes with my Torque app and my ELM327 bluetooth reader. I get "ECU connected", yay, all is well! Time to scan! But no. I can't receive anything on the app. No data what so ever! No MAF, throttle position, revs - nothing! But it says "ECU connected, OK!"

So, now I think this is some deeper electronic error. Since I can connect to ECU, but the car doesn't send me any data at all.

What is wrong with my car? haha
And, funny thing - this all happened almost exactly 20hours before my yearly car inspection! FML!

I've been thinking about resoldering the IC's in the DIM, but does my issues really apply to the DIM?

I actuall got codes from VIDA that my friend helped me with. But there was a lot of old codes stored as well, so I don't know which ones is accurate :(

Error codes:
(roughly translated from Swedish)

All stored under CEM section on printed page. Error codes read by autocom

1A5B - Communication with SWM, steering wheel unit
- Intermittent
6C48 - Transponder type, signal not correct
- Intermittent
1A56 - Communication with DIM
- Permanent
1A5C - Communication with UEM, upper electronic central
- Intermittent
6C46 - Antenna/lightring, internal error
- Intermittent

I got these codes before my used LSM arrived, but I'll try to get a new read this week.

According to 1A56 it seems like the DIM is broke, and will a resoldering solve this problem?
And 1A5C doesn't sound like a good error to have either, what to do about that?

Thanks for any help at all. I will update the thread as I solve my issues so other people might get a clue on what to do if this happens to them.

Clear all your errors, or at least try to, and then report back.

I would look at your alternator and battery. This may be tough, but what is the part number on the alternator voltage regulator? Check the part number to see if it is one of the "bad" ones.

Finally check your CEM relays. I had a bad one that caused me tons of problems and made everything impossible to diagnosis.
