94 940 turbo sedan radiator fan questions

Post by pburchins »

My son's 1994 940 turbo overheated the other day and blew the heater control valve. We replaced it and it is working. However, this isn't the first time it has overheated. We noticed that the fan for the radiator was not coming on at all. I pulled the relay off and tested the fan directly to the batter and the fan turned. We put the relay back on the vehicle and let it idle for awhile without the A/c on. When my son turned on the A/C and the a/c blower on high the radiator fan turned on. When he turned the A/C off it turned off. My questions are......

1. Does the radiator fan turn on just when the A/C is turned off ?

2. Will the fan come on when the temperature gets to high and the A/C is off ??

3. I do not see a temperature sensor that tells the fan to turn on so how does it know to come on ?? ( of course, I dont know how a thermos know to keep liquid warm or cold either :) )

I am glad it is working, but , I am concerned if it working properly.

Thanks for any information you can provide !

Pat
