1999 v70 ABS Sensor replacement difficulty

Post by juggles »

My mechanic tells me that I need a new ABS sensor and the ABS light has been coming on lately. I'm wondering how difficult a job this is for the amateur. I've done things like brake pads and wheel bearings in the past, although not on this car. I searched for a thread that addressed this but couldn't find me. Please direct me if this question has already been answered, or if anyone can point me to instructions or a tutorial.

Thanks.

Jack up, wheel off, 10mm bolt, disconnect sensor wire and reverse.

15 minutes once wheel is off.

You should rule out ABS module first

Look up Mid-west abs. The owner, Matty, is a member at this site and he specializes in repairing our abs modules. At his web site he provides complete instructions what to do. His exchange program cannot be beat.

This video tutorial is a little annoying to watch, but it does show how easy it is to replace an ABS sensor.
2011 XC70 T6 - current
2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 - Totaled in 2022. Not my fault.
2011 XC60 - sold
2000 V70XC - given to a friend, wish I still had it.

If he pulled a code for the LF wheel sensor and is telling you to replace it based on the code alone then you are likely (90%) going down the wrong path. Almost every faulty module throws that code being that they are the first two small pins to crack.

When I repair I do 30-40 at a time. Out of 40 modules at least 30 of them will have that code as the very first one popped.
