V70 Air Conditioning Unit

Post by KYBlueV70 »

I just bought a used 1999 V70 with 90k miles and have a few questions re: the AC unit.

(1) The AC is working but is making a consistent loud clicking noise when turnd on. Is this normal?
(2) I've heard that only Volvo dealers can recharge the AC. Any truth in this?

Thanks for your feedback!

Clicking noise is normal, I also hear this clicking on mine, it is a relay.Pump up the volume a little bit and the noise will disappear

True, but you can also service it yourself. Buy a can of the R134-A gas at any autoparts store. Make sure and buy the hose and gauge kit too so you can fill your system to the correct pressure level. The low pressure service port is in front of the ECU housing and behind the passenger front head light. You'll see a cap that you have to unscrew from the port with some markings on it in Nm's for the correct AC pressure.

The clicking will slow down with more pressure in the system. Fill to the upper limits of the "safe" zone on your gauge and you'll feel very comfortable even in the hottest part of summer.

DIY and save about 125 bucks.
I am a current Volvo 850T5 owner. Have had '67 144ES, 71 142E, 76 245DL, 80 242GT, 81 245DL. Still wish that I had the 142E. :(

I scored an '06 Harley Dyna Superglide for Fathers day.

Should have said, you might need 2 cans. If you don't have the gauge, use a thermometer and put it in the center console air duct, or get someone to hold it in there. Turn the air on recirculate and full blast with other vents closed. When the temp goes down to 40degrees F. you've put enough gas in there.
