2005 S40 Radio Not Working- Climate Control Does Work

Post by AmandaLynn13 »

I recently purchased a 2005 Volvo S40 T4 AWD, the radio does not work. The screen does display climate control information, and if you hit the power button the initial radio start screen pops up with the picture of the Volvo, but then goes back to just showing the climate info. I brought it to a small local Volvo shop and they thought it was the ICM (Infotainment Control Module) so they offered to replace it with a used one, but that did not work so I ended up bringing it to a Volvo dealer to get a proper diagnosis and got a quote for around $1,200 to replace the IAM (Integrated Audio Module)- about $600 of it was parts, the rest was labor and programming. That seems ridiculous to me considering I can take out and reinstall the IAM in less than 10 minutes.

Some forums I've read say you can use a used one if you match the part number exactly- some say you can do this but will need programming and some say you can do this and it should be plug and play. SO, I found a used one online with a matching part number exactly, and put it in and it still does the same thing. I contacted the company prior to ordering to make sure it was a matching part, and they told me it would not need to be programmed.

My dilemma now is, does it need to be programmed? Or is it possibly my wiring? I'm willing to try anything aside from spend $1,200 on a stock radio on a car that I paid less than $5k for. :x

You can get a DiCE / VIDA setup for ~$100 that will let you look at the car's trouble reports and review the steps needed to replace the part. Can you get a list of the exact trouble signals the car was putting out?

Thank heavens I haven't had to learn about the "infotainment system" foibles yet. Assuming that you've taken care of the hardware side, the programming should be a lot less than $1200. The radio system is quite complex, with amps and comm cables scattered throughout the vehicle.

I was looking into getting the Dice/VIDA but there are a bunch of versions so I wasn't sure where to start with that either, but I'd rather do that than have to go to a dealer every time I have an issue.

Hello all

I am new to the forum

I have the same problem on Volvo C70 2008 premium sound

One day I turned on the car and radio, cd, aux, satellite was not working..... CD is not even loading cds ( nothing)

When you press the radio power button the picture of the C70 comes up but then nothing. If I press FM button nothing happens... IF I press the CD/Sirius/ aux buttons I can navigate to these menus but whatever I select, it does nothing....

In the car configuration , in the menu I used to have a equalizer menu but now this menu has disappear not showing anymore.

I bought on Ebay a new amplifier, the Info entertainment display and the CD player. I replaced all of them and nothing..... it does not work

Any help what else can I look at? I am desperate looking for more ideas on what to look at

I do not need to mention that I have checked fuses both inside the car and the engine compartment.

Many Many Thanks

The only time (I've read) of the audio and climate control not working properly is when it was loaded with Sirius Radio or other third market product from the factory and the license ran out at the previous owner deleted it. This was posted over on Swedespeed but I really didn't pay much attention to it. It seems that because the "water fall" in our cars takes care of both audio and climate control, it can be impacted by the Infotainment Center. This seems to be only a dealer resolvable issue- once again, from what I read. I say that this is going to require you going to the dealer and talking to them specifically that you think that there was some type of third party audio system linked to the system and from there, they should be able to download an update to the ICM (Infotainment Control Module) to resolve this issue. I hope I'm on the right track here! $1200 is steep...I'd check around with other dealers. I'm not sure if your own copy of VIDA/DICE can load the software, of even if it could, you'd have to buy a short term subscription (like 3 days) to download and install anything which would end up costing you more than just having a "reasonable" dealer do this, unless you go in with someone who also needs to have things done.

I know the post is old but it may help someone.
I have a 2006 Volvo C70 and just fixed that radio issue.
Bad amplifier causing radio to not working.
C70 with premium sound has two amplifiers in the trunk.
in my case was the one for subs.
you can easily test which one is bad. they are connected with a fiber optic jumper. disconnect the jumper and connect fiber cable directly into first amplifier. turn the radio on. If still an issue then connect fiber cable into subs amplifier. try the radio.
you may be lucky with just one bad amplifier but if you see any water stains in the left corner of your trunk then it is possible that both are bad.

Can anyone please instruct me on the location of the Sirius XM module location on a 2008 C70?
