Hi,
I recently had the rear rotors and brakes replaced on my 96 850R. I noticed after driving several miles and the brakes (hot), that there was a really bad vibration when braking.
I found a post on here relating to this issue and that it relates to replacing the shims.
My mechanic mentioned that my car needs a vibration damper in the back which he ordered....I asked him if that is the same as brake shims...he said no (they already have them on).
I am not sure what he is talking about vs what I am talking about. Are these 2 separate things? If so, what is the difference?

Not sure what he is talking about. Some of the brakes have a piece of spring steel that attaches to the slider pins and stop the pads rattling when there is no pressure on the brake pads. There are also some anti-squeal shims that sit between the back of the pad and the caliper piston and prevent vibration squeal when the brakes are pressed. Some newer style pads have the shim built in.
I once fitted brand new rotors and pads to a 98 V70 XC (Zimmerman rotors and Volvo pads) and had vibration out of the box. Had vibration before that with the previous rotors and pads also. Ended up having the new rotors turned and problem went away.
There are many threads on this subject but the 3 main issues other than warped rotors are:
1) Failing parking brake - De-laminated parking brake shoes, or seized parking brake cables.
2) Seized rear calipers or flexible rubber pipes failing internally and 'sticking the brakes partly on
3) Brake pads not compatible with the rotors, or sticking on the slider pins.
Neil.

I put new rotors on my car a few years ago with grooves scored in them. I've never like the vibration I get on braking. Maybe I should try new pads but I'm pretty sure it's the scoring that's responsible
