I found a 1995 850 Turbo for sale with 178k miles. I went and looked at it today. It's a bit rough around the edges but I love the car. Rides great, feels great, etc. And it's a steal of a price. At first the engine was quiet. Then after I drove down the highway and in town and returned to the lot, I noticed a pronounced click coming from the engine. Far louder than injector tick and didn't do it until it warmed up. I almost bought it but this has me scared. What do you guys think? Thanks guys.

Get your piece of garden hose out and travk down the exact location

Either a lifter problem or a exhaust manifold leak? I think I would lean towards the latter.

Run, internal engine noise that is quiet at start up can be a number of things. How was the oil level? And the rest of the car was rough?

Well it had a few things wrong that go along with a 20 year old car. Cruise didn't work, front speakers don't work. But the suspension and gearbox felt great. Engine performance felt great also.

My old 850 ended up sounding like that when it got up in miles. I took it to the local Volvo indie shop, and the old mechanic who's been a Volvo tech since the 70's said that was the normal sound if a hydraulic lifter doesn't fully pump up. He opened the oil filler cap while idling, to check to see that there was lots of oil moving in the head. If not, he said it could be an oil delivery issue to the top end. In this case, there was lots of oil. He told me it wasn't worth the effort to try to fix a flat lifter, and the car would run for many years in that condition. In my case, I put on another 60k miles, and then sold it for someone else to keep driving, so I don't know if it ever became more of an issue. In the case of my car, it was most noticeable if idling inside the garage, or up against a wall like the drive-through, where the sound could echo back. Otherwise inside the car it was hardly audible at idle, and not at all once underway. I'm not sure if that's the same issue with the car you're looking at, but that's my experience in any case.

Oil pressure is lower when the engine is hot... that means the engine won't last long.

Probably only another 60-90k miles. Pay attention to the noise and if it is unchanging, you'll be OK!

Some cheap oil filters cause this due to oil starvation

Open the oil filler cap and have a look at the cams. Is it clean or all gunked up in there?
