2009 s80 Spark Plug Tightening Torque

Post by karacobans »

Hi All,

I bought a 2009 s80 3.2 lt. a month ago. It has 101k miles on it. All factory scheduled maintenance was done at a Volvo dealer so far. Although it is running well, I want to change oil, filters and spark plugs before I begin to drive it. I am handy and planning to do them in my garage. I bought genuine spark plugs from Volvo dealer with part #: 31216183 .In general manufacturers provide tightening torque values but it is not written on package for genuine Volvo spark plugs.

I could find this when I searched online: http://infopart.org/volvo-31216183-part . It doesn't give information about the torque. Does anyone know tightening torque for 31216183 spark plugs?

My Haynes manual for the S80 does not provide a torque value. I always do it by feel; not too tight in an aluminum cylinder head, on a new spark plug a bit firmer due to the crush washer needing to 'settle in'. I think it's recommended to put some antiseize on the threads.

Just changed the plugs on my 2000 S80 T6 (B6284T). I used Bosch spark plugs, and the torque specified on the packaging was 28 Nm/21 ft.lbs, so I'm guessing it will be something similar for you.

Usually these plugs have a crush washer so for a new plug, I tighten - always on cold engine - until the washer touches down, then another 90 to 180 degrees turn. For an old plug, with the washer already crushed, it will be something like 30-45 degree turn. I don't like them over-tighten so it's more easy to be removed if needed.
