2004 S60 2.5T - Identify This Mystery Part / Mechanism

Post by BaronVonAnt »

Hi there, Folks - first-time poster here.

So, the other day I go out to the '04 S60 to start taking care of my 135k service; about to replace my air filter, when I notice a very slapstick sprung spring just hanging out, along with a cracked plastic connection / compression lid that can no longer attach to the base. I've taken great care of her, I promise!

I inspected a little closer, and found that the spring had a small rubber disk with poles on either side, which insert into the spring center and cracked plastic connection, respectively.

Observing the plastic base of the cracked plastic top (the only part, as far as I can tell, that is broken or problematic), the following is stamped:
Volvo
979040 Code I
979041 Code II
979042 Code III
979043 Code IV
Also stamped on the other side of the same part is:
PA66 * GF

I consulted my trusty Haynes shop manual, to no avail. I looked through every page in the book, twice. Nothing. I may be missing something absolutely obvious, and if so, feel free to chide me. Nevertheless, I need some assistance identifying the parts I need to purchase here, and what this actually is.

An overview of the routing:

Any help at all, identifying what this does, and where I can attain replacement parts, would be greatly appreciated.

That would be the vacuum pump valve, Volvo part number 31400692,

They do seem to go bad, when they do the vacuum pump doesn't shut off when the car is running.

Hey @bskeels - thanks a lot!

You pointed me right in the direction I need to go.

It seems replacing just the cracked portion isn't an option, so it looks like $65 shipped, and a half hour or less of my time will be all it should take.

Thanks again!
