1999 V70 Stopping after 1 second
My car is doing the classic start then stop after 1 second (intermittently). I'v replaced the key antenna (the ring) and the starting switch on the other side of the column from the tumbler. The car still does this start - stop intermittently. The steering column in this car moves a bit. So to start the car, I need to rotate the column slightly while starting and it seem to work...most the time. What could this be??? Any things to look at? Help!

It sounds like the key ring connections might be loose? The 1 second is a giveaway for an immobilizer problem of some kind. If you hook with a VIDA user in Boston area, you can confirm that.

Thanks abscate. Key ring...that's what the dealer calls the antenna, right? I'll look at that again. What do you mean by "immobilizer" is this an actual module module or just a term for a function the antenna (key ring) serves with the cars CPU under the hood?

Sorry, I mean antenna ring, correct.
Its a lot more complicated on your 1999 than 1998. If I get this right, the antenna ring is the same, but the keys, modules and ECU all have to be coded together via software once ME7 (1999) model year came.

Yes, you are correct. The ECU & TCM are coded to the key in this 99 model. I have replaced the TCM, had it re-coded to the ECU at the place in Canada and they said the same thing. So, you are thinking that since I am wiggling the steering column and the car will start, it is probably not the ECU or any other control module, but is some lose connection in a connector/wire in the column. Correct?

My first guess would be the ignition switch electrical part. Did you use a Volvo part or a cheap one?
Im thinking if not that, then a loose antenna ring.
VIDA would tell you this for certain - maybe check the HELPERS forum in Boston for someone nearby with VIDA?

I used an aftermarket ignition switch. I still have the original one and since my problem did not go away, I would assume the original ignition switch is still good. I'll put it back. I will also look for a loose connection with the antenna ring too. I do ave a buddy with a VIDA code analyzer. Last effort, I will hit him up for it. Thanks for the help and confirmation on my trouble shooting. I'll let you know wat happens.

I had similar problem that was rectified by carefully disassembling the antenna ring connector (harness end), and crimping the female connector a bit. After reassembly, there was noticeably more friction pushing the connector onto the antenna ring. Since that time I haven't had a single start-stall event, where I used to have them at random quite regularly.

Had the same issue with my 99 T5 and the major factor to this was the ETM paired with the MAF. Heck I even had an IMM-233 (antenna ring no connection) and the car functioned after the two. The previous owner gave up searching after replacing the ring, checking the fuel pump relay, also removing the ETM (white label) and slapping it back with no luck.
Vida helped me tremendously to pin point codes and the OBD2 scanner I had only picked up the MAF code (older code reader).
I'd say buy Vida Dice (around $100) or have someone on the forum check the codes for you as the dealer will charge you minimum $125 for just that. I chose to spend that money towards the scanner because this was a 2nd car which I didn't need immediately and time wasn't an issue.
Check and see if you still have a white label ETM or if its yellow look up the year on the bottom line of numbers (google yellow sticker etm images) The year is the two first digits followed by a W.
