2002 s60 2.4T ac bearing size - confirmation required

Post by Homebrand »

Hi All,
I have a noisy ac clutch pulley. It rattles at idle quite badly.
Thought I might have a go at replacing the bearing.
Does anyone know the bearing size/dimensions?

Edited and updated.
Can anyone confirm if the bearing size would be:

35mm ID x 55mm OD x 20mm Thick.
Cheers

Anyone?
Although looking at it closer I'll be damned if I know how I'll do it whilst it's still connected to the gas lines.

Are you sure it's not a belt tensioner or alternator? Those quit much faster.

Interesting you say that. I was almost certain it was the alternator.
I had a mechanic look at it and he said the a/c compressor.
I used a long handle screwdriver to listen to the alternator and the sound definetly came through clear as day when touching the alternator.
I'm going to triple check this.
I think you may be right.
I'll report back.
Cheers

Ok, reporting back. I didn't get around to replacing anything and the noise suddenly disappeared. That's either really good or really bad but either way it's gone.

If you de-tension the belt you could check each pulley for play.

It looks like you have the correct dimensions for the clutch bearing:

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Hello, I have a similar problem.

My 2003 V70 has developed a whine over about 6 months. Its definitely one of the items driven by the auxiliary belt since if I slacken it the whine stops the the engine is back to its former refined self.

I thought it was the tensioner, which had a little play, and having looked at this forum I changed that but no joy.

I just took off the auxilary belt again and the alternator spins freely and silently but the ac pulley sounds bad and has some wobble so I reckon its that.

So, to follow up the previous question, has anyone changed the bearing without taking off the compressor? Not sure if it has to be on the bench or if some sort of puller is needed to get the pulley/ bearing off.

Would love to hear from anyone who has changed the bearing on the bench and could say if they could have done in the car.

Thanks in advance

You can pop the clutch off the AC compressor but you have to,drop, the compressor down to access it. There is about 1 cm clearance between the clutch and the frame member installed.

Great, thanks, i will do as you say.

I just looked at the end of the pulley and can only see a small bolt in the centre. Any advice on how the pulley/ clutch is held on would be much appreciated.

The A/C clutch bearing doesn't whine, it makes a friction noise.

Maybe get a longer hose and with extreme care approach one end to the power steering pump (it will wine with the wrong fluid or if it sucks air) or other parts and listed at the ear at the other end. Again, watch your hands and rotating belt
