In the middle of replacing the growler passenger side front axle bearing, and my hub is stuck on the axle stub. It won't move with a drift or three arm puller, lube, or heat.
I want to remove the axle shaft and take the shaft and hub to someone with a press, but can't find an axle removal procedure for a manual 99.
Do i just loosen the bearing carriage and pop the axle off like the driver side?

I try to pop the axle loose from the hub after removing just the caliper & rotor. I use a 2" diameter by 3' long brass bar as a battering ram. So far, I've always popped the axle loose from the hub!
I haven't removed a manual axle though, so I can't help you there regarding how it comes out of the tranny

The driver side just popped out, but I don't know how the carrier makes that different on the passenger side.
All data did not help me out on this one, unfortunately.
Last time I drifted out the driver stub axle a bit too far and ruined an OEM driveshaft. I do not want to repeat that as I bet this one is impossible to find. So far the stub has not moved from a drift with oil and heat applied,so I do need to remove it with the axle and press it out carefully.
Thanks for help, Russ!

I've never touched a manual car axle but for the record, with the autos you indeed just remove the collar on the carrier bearing and the axle eases right out.

Erik, thanks. On tomorrow's agenda to get this dealt with.
I had the whole wheel knocked down in 30 minutes, then spent the next three hours unsuccessfully trying to get the hub off the axle. Humility teaches.

Manual and the slushbox are all the same as far as removing the axle goes. If you are changing the axle anyway just get a bigger hammer. The only thing holding the right side in is the cap on the carrier bearing.

I have found using a lighter hammer works better, unless you have a sledge with a long handle and can build up some good momentum, a 24oz ball pein you can swing really fast and give the hub a shock

Removed two 12mm head bolts from the clamshell mount, tap off the lower half of carrier, and the axle came off with hand pressure.
Now to get return to the programming of getting the stub out of the steering knuckle

Well, after hitting it with a drift for an hour, acetone/ATF, heat, etc...im out of tricks
Im also 90% certain I have broken another CV cage even though the stub axle has not moved. Don't understand that, maybe the axle has just come apart as its loose from the car.
Ill take it to my local indie who has a press, get the hub out, new bearing in, and evaluate the driveshaft.
