1998 v70 cabin fan faulty
NEED HELP with my cabin fan intermittently not working, so today it started raining and I had to wind the window up and turn on the fan. After a few seconds it was apparent that it wasn't working so I pulled over and started tapping the slider control which worked it before but now nothing. I took the car to a near by auto electrician and while waiting I checked the climate control fuse, the auto electrician said to bring it back the next day and he would check it out. I was driving home and went over a bump on the road and the fan started blowing air...now I cant fix it because its working, that is until the next time. Any ideas on what it could be??

The blower motor is going out, it is a super common problem. They get sticky and work intermittently, then stop all together. Change it before it kills the blower motor resistor. You may be able to extend its life by lubricating the motor, this has been written up many, many times, here is a thread that is probably good https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=56723.
The motor is from Bosch, about $70-80 USD, part number 0130111134.

ok thanks, ive removed the glovebox and tried to check the plugs but they are tricky to unplug so I will wait until it gives trouble again. The motor is really quiet and no funny noises at all, I watched the video and theres a obvious bearing noise that I don't have.

It is also possible the resistor is going out, sometimes the resistor goes even though the fan isn't seizing. In that case, the next time it goes out see if the fan still works on the highest setting. That would indicate a resistor problem.

The bearings don't always get noisy when they go. They allow the fan blade assembly to move back and forward depending on car accelerating or slowing. This can cause the fan to loosen off or bind.
Removing it is not a big job, but presumably your car is RHD, so is your fan on the LH side being the glove box?
If so, with the glove box out, you need to undo the under tray (2 screws) drop it down at the front and slide it out. You need to disconnect the floor illumination light and then remove it completely. If you have the knee brace bar, there are 3 x 14mm (?) nuts to remove. 2 on the LH end and one on the RH end. You then need to pull down and wiggle the brace down to remove it. There are 4 Torx screws on the motor (assuming RHD and LHD are the same). You can then remove the fan. It is a bit fiddly and you may have to rotate the housing a bit to get it out. The wiring is easier to remove then.
If you can move the fan blade unit back and forward on the shaft, then the motor is near death. If there is in movement, a you could try a little light oil and see if it makes a difference. This may only help temporarily, but at least it may help identify the issue. As the other guys have advised also check the resistor pack if this does not help. Your car is 17 years old and if this is the original fan, it is probably time for a new one.
Neil.

So I removed the fan to check its operation and I'm fairly confident the plug is the culprit. a lot of red residue (looked like paint) on the contacts cleaned off as well as 20 years of fluff. The motor is made by Delco USA so it should last another 100 years?..there was little or no play in the bearings yet I still sprayed WD-40 on it and now my air smells like WD-40.
Where is the resistor pack?..is it that thing with the aluminium fins??

FYI Bulletin for others in CONUS: there is a $5 rebate at eEuroparts right now on any Bosch purchase $50-99, so that works out to $67 right now for the blower motor
