850t has anyone installed stock muffler w/out a lift ?

Post by johnnyfd »

I cut the old one to get it off. the end of the cat pipe looks good even though the clamp was a pain to get off.I bought a genuine Volvo muffler.the front of the car is up on ramps and I thought I'd be able to tilt the muffler enough so that I could get the pipe past the tight spot over the control arm but now I'm not so sure and don't want to start and get it wedged in and not be able to get it back out. so before I do that has anyone been able to do this successfully without a lift. also I need to exclude taking out the spring and shock as a way to do this if someone was going to suggest this. I'm trying to avoid going to the muffler shop. the local shop that seemed best qualified did some unsatisfactory work on my other car so I'd like to avoid a shop. if anyone has succeeded in doing this the way I'm talking about could you please give me some specific tips about how to angle the muffler and/or how high you need to get the car at the front or even doing a side lift with a jack and then using jack stands?

I tried to remove one at a pick-n-pull with the car about two feet off the ground (front and rear) and I couldn't do it without cutting the pipe in two places. On a lift you can thread it in as one piece but every time I look next to the garage there still isn't a lift there. :D

It's' been a few years, but I think I did it with all 4 tires on concrete blocks.
I may have had to unload the rear suspension (tires still on the blocks) a few inches with a jack too.

I put the front wheels on ramps so that I would have enough room towards the front of the car to rotate the muffler as I fit the pipe over the control arm. This was so silly of me because I didn't realize that I was making the opening over the control arm so much smaller by compressing the rear suspension by lifting the front wheels. I will take the car down and then try lifting at the side and placing jacks and see how that goes. I wouldn't have realized this if the previous poster (sorry I forgot your name) hadn't mentioned that he had to unload the suspension where the exhaust pipe goes over.
