05 S60 timing gone into the twilight zone, wont run TDC!

Post by n1gct »

i dont get stumped too often but this one really has me scratching my head unless i am missing something

so i bought a 05 S60 with 150k. its running like crap.

it has CEL P0014 cam pos sensor
p0303 cyl 3 misfire
p0026 intake control valve circuit

did a compression test and cyl 3 has no compression

i assumed the t belt may have slipped a tooth, so i pulled it apart, set crank to TDC and even had a brake line in cyl 1 to verify TDC - i read up that cyl 1 is closest to belts. got her all timed up with a new belt in place and guess what?
she wont start?!?!?

she ran before when it was WAY out of time.

so i marked the cam sprockets when it was running- fortunately and timed it up the old way-
crank at TDC, exhaust cam (closest to firewall) was set correctly but the intake cam was 180 degrees OUT

i put belt back the way it was and it RUNS but crappy like before.

ANYONE have ANY idea how a car can NOT run when everything set to TDC and only when its way off timing like this?

the ONLY explanation is the t belt slipped and smashed up cyl 3 valve(s) but if a belt slips how can it slip THAT many teeth?

the tensioner is OK and it had correct tension. the old t belt looks crappy but not broken.
my experience when t belts slip you will lose some tension.

or is it possible i am 180 degrees out on the crankshaft side?

Welcome aboard!

Do not use TDC for setting the time; there are timing marks on crank and cam sprockets that need to be aligned. See the attached procedure.

thats exactly what i did. the cam sprockets were up at their marks, and there was a small .5mm notch at the crank sprocket. it appeared like there was some hairline line on the crank sprocket. is there also a mark on the flywheel maybe? i looked at several photos and the mark the show are all vague at best.

are there any better pics of this mark on the crank sprocket?

what was SO ODD is with old belt the marks on the cams NEVER got CLOSE to lining up.
the closest it was was the exhaust would be set right but the intake was 180 degrees out (6 oclock) when cyl 5 piston was at the top.

See this detailed writeup from one of our contributors; there are nice photos in there:

Disregard the hydraulic tensioner related steps (your engine has the mechanical arrangement) and refer to the VIDA procedure for it.

When you've done the timing correctly and you still suspect bent valves (let's hope you are wrong), you can run a compression test to verify. :D
