1999 s70 ETM

Hello folks! I'm going to look at a 1999 S70 turbo 186k $700. The guy said it's the ETM. That the ETS light is on it runs rough and eventually it dies out. Is it as complicated as the dealer explained it to me? We have one dealer in the area, they told me that it would cost just under $1000. And even if I got one and put it on I'd have to go back to them for the software anyway.
Not sure if its worth it.

Any help understanding the ETM replacement and if its worth keeping the car on the road is appreciated

The best way to deal with the ETM is to install Sacer position sensors and be done with it. The sensors can be user installed but it requires well above average soldering skills from what I have been told. I am very skilled at soldering and electronics repair but I have not yet had to deal with it on my ETMs and have no actual experience.

The simpler method is to send the ETM to a re-builder like XeMODeX. http://xemodex.com/us/

I think the service is $439.00 if you send them your module but they want to screw you for another $75.00 to put it in a box and mail it to you. Since they are simply changing the sensors on your mated module will not need another software download to mate it to the car.

If the original module has the original software then an update may need to be flashed but that should be a no charge item at the dealership since it fell under a recall. Check with your dealer though since they may not offer the free update if the module has been modified. With the VIN number they should be able to see if it ever was updated and if it was eligible for the update in the first place.

Getting the ETM off on a turbo is no picnic but so long as you know that it is going to be complicated when you try it takes some of the frustration out of it. The big snag is the coolant flange on the bottom of the intake manifold. It is awkwardly placed and difficult to access.

I should have an ETM back from ARD this week, with the same Sacer sensor Xemodex installs for like $500. ARD charges much less and I have no reason to believe it'll be any less good.

You can buy a rebuilt ETM from FCP Euro for $375 (see link below), the only other task is having it programmed. It cost me $100 at a local Volvo shop (dealer wanted $250 for programming)...$475 when all said and done and works beautifully!

Is this a new development? I don't recall seeing these being offered before.

I don't know other than searching my foreign auto part websites. I have owned a 97 850 Turbo, 98 S70 (non-turbo) and now own a 2000 S70 (131K, non-turbo), the non-turbo's are easier to work on since turbo stuff doesn't crowd the engine compartment and with forums like this one, easier to troubleshoot problems. It was a first time fix for me but relatively easy. It has been running for 2-days problem free!

ETM replacement was the way for me to go with a '99 S70 non-turbo. I went the XeModex route. No problems since. The ETM accessibility is a bit better on the non-turbo, but either way, it is a doable DIY job. Please do not, however, count on that being the absolutely only thing that needs to be done to a $700 car. If no record of it, the coil packs and spark plugs are long overdue for replacement and if you are on the original suspension, that's going to need refreshing as well. Still, my $900 car is doing quite well after all of those things. Yours won't stay a $700 car for long, however. One thing nice about the XeModex option is that I shipped my actual unit to them so no reprogramming was needed when it came back.
