2001 V70 Multiple electrical issues due to rodent damage

Post by apd1004 »

Hi all,

First - I do not have VIDA.

I have recently discovered evidence of rodent infestation under the hood and in the rear cargo area under the cargo compartment fuse box and tail lights. They chewed through the windshield washer hose for the rear window just inside the frame from the tailgate hinge. There was enough hose slack for me to splice that. I suspect they have also chewed some wiring harnesses because I have multiple sporadic electrical issues.

The electrical issues are sporadic in that sometimes the problem goes away. The rear window defogger is totally out. The right side brake light & turn signal are both out, and I get an error message specifically mentioning that whenever I hit the brakes or try to use the right turn signal.

Other intermittent problems are the steering wheel stereo controls will stop functioning and at the same time that happens, the lights on the radio display go out. Sometimes the lights come back on when the car is started and at the same time the steering wheel controls work again. Those two issues are always linked. The cruise control still works when that problem is occurring.

The question is - and I do not know much about it since this is my first Volvo and I've only had it a little over a year - is it going to cost me an arm and a leg to take the car to a dealer to get these issues addressed?

Thanks

Pretty sure it will cost you 2 arms and 2 legs at the dealer.

As above, better looking inside the hood with a flash light and even under the car put on jackstands (never use the spare jack when getting under the car). Check out the fuses boxes to see if fuses are blown and if they blow again when replaced. For the trunk it's not hard to remove the plastics and inspect the wires. A trip to a scrap yard may be the most economical way to replace wiring
