Water Pump Stuck

Post by DownRangeNailDriver »

Ok, I am officially stumped. I have a 98 S70 Na and am trying to remove the water pump. I've removed all 7 bolts, but the pump housing will not budge! I've tried to remove it with a pry bar, but the darn thing acts like it is welded to the block.

Any thoughts?

The book says to tap the pump wheel to remove the pump. Install new gasket and tighten to 17 nm. Maybe a well placed whack with a rubber hammer would do it.

Careful with any prying tools. You do NOT want to damage the sealing surface where the gasket sits. There are 2 guide pins on the water pump, they can get a little "stuck" Hit the pulley with a hammer

It is in an awkward location, I used a pipe (you can use a small piece of wood like a broom stick), placed it on the WP pulley and hit with a hammer.
No violence needed, just a few regular taps, it will get loose:

Also keep in mind that someone may have used used some kind of sealant on there too, even though it is not called for. Get a long dowel and mallet as suggested, give it some whacks from above, some whacks below, see if you can pop loose the seal.

What is the vintage of the water pump? Another option is to leave it in there if it is a Volvo pump with less than 200k on it. They fail rarely, 3 timing belt intervals is not unreasonable at all for a Volvo branded pump. Of course using a metal pipe is much more likely to damage the bearing than a wooden dowel, so don't go wailing on it if you may want to leave it until next time.

In 99.99% of the time, when the WP is removed, it is for replacement.
The Volvo Aisin WP gasket seal virtually never goes bad during its service life that requires WP to be removed and new seal applied.
So, yes if one needs to re-use the WP, then take care not to hit it too hard.
However, if the WP is being replaced, no need to worry.

Sure, check the wording in my post: I am referring to the case in which the WP is not removed. OP needs to take care if, because it can not be removed, he ends up leaving the WP in place.
