99 V70 no spark lawn mower, car wash syndrome

Post by pfmet »

Hello all, this mornings cold start went normal in that the motor turned fine, fired as usual, and then immediately stopped. It never does that. It fires, it runs. Today not so much. I proceeded to try to restart a few times but I gave up soon as it appeared I was not getting spark. Not a sputter or hint of ignition. Just a fast turning motor. Had to run so I was of in the truck with no time to poke around. I've done a couple searches for "no spark" and such but have gotten no hits. Any hints on where the appropriate threads would be or where I begin to trouble shoot this. It seems as though the ignition system just gave up the instant the motor started. Thanx Guys

Did you actually check for spark? That is a must in this case; fast turning motor sure sounds a lot more like lawn mower syndrome. I have had it happen seemingly out of nowhere on cold mornings, just like that (car barely fires up then dies, then spins with no/low compression).

On the other hand if it is truly a no-spark condition, look first into the cam position sensor. My routine is to check the connector, then swap in a known good one. Not sure what the connector layout is on your 99, though.

I do believe you got it. I thought the bendix wasn't engaging at first because the motor seemed to be spinning way to freely. I can't believe you can loose that much compression to wash down , and what would cause the sudden stop after having fired? Just a question. I'll do some investigating in the morning and thank you for the response. Best, Peter

Was LMS. We had moved the car over so I could back the truck in then 1/2 hour later moved it over to where the truck had been, get the picture? And the next morning it got me. The plugs were dry when I pulled them so I just put 1Tbs of straight 30 in each cylinder held the throttle open and cranked as directed. It started, sputtering and smoking as described and finally smoothed out and now runs and starts fine. The car will not be started again without being allowed to warm up.
