98 S70 "Peeling out" sound while turning left at slow speeds...

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hello all,
A quick question here, I have a sound that happens from the car when making a sharp left turn. The only way I can describe the noise is that it sounds like I'm peeling out... (But the sound happens when driving at 25mph!) It doesn't sound like the noise is coming from the engine. It sounds like it's coming from the tires? Could this be a bearing?

The car has new tie rods (inner and outer, Meyle), new control arms (Febi), new sway ends (Karlyn!), in addition to new Gabriel Readymounts! The car also has new tires (15" Generals). I changed the axle on the driver's side, too (Pepboys brand). Yes, this car has been a "delightful" money pit, but the wife loves it... So who am I to judge?

I had an alignment done after the tie rods but not after the struts. (Steering wheel when going straight is turned maybe 7 degrees to the left.) Would an alignment perhaps correct this noise? Or should I just get used to the sound? Also, the car doesn't vibrate at 60mph (or at 25mph) or rather, no more than any 18 year old car would... The car handles pretty freaking solid right now. Thanks everyone!

Are you at the steering lock? (meaning the wheel is turned all the way) Is it the tires, or perhaps the power steering pump squealing?

Not necessarily. The sound, which I can only describe as "peeling out"-like sound, happens when making a quick (25-35mph!) left turn. I've mimicked the sound with the window down. It feels like it's coming from the wheel. It's a rubber-on-asphalt-like sound...

Yes, I think you should revisit an alignment. Assuming something isn't still off, it should line up straight when going straight. If it still doesn't line up after an alignment, ask the shop to put the car in the air and figure out WHY.

Our Camry squealed the old set of tires at about 5-10 MPH in a parking lot. Just a combination of crap tires and excessive camber that car puts into the wheel when turning sharply. I believe the excessive camber, perhaps on just one wheel, when going around a turn is what you're seeing too.

Maybe it's just a brake dust shield rubbing?

I'll take the wheel off and check it out (though, I was careful not to bend that piece!). Thanks RussB and jblackburn, really appreciate it! I will proceed with the alignment first, the wheel should be in the center and should hold being that it has all new suspension/steering parts. I never got an alignment at a "real" alignment spot... :? I'm sure that's the problem.

After my marathon rear sub-frame rebuild on my AWD, I was careful to try to get everything aligned as it came off. Even so, immediately discovered on driving it for the first time, The steering wheel was now suddenly canted slightly clockwise, preventing the turn signals correcting.

I have to consider that I replaced worn out bushes, re-aligned the sub-frame, and tried to re-position the camber/track control arms at the rear to where they came off. A full 4 wheel alignment at the Dealer sorted all that and it is now good again.

Hopefully the alignment is all that is needed.

Neil.

I have had some very good mechanics do a great job aligning my vehicles...and I have had some real monkeys twist and turn things to try and make it right. Not all shops & techs are created equal

I've had that exact problem, it was poor alignment in my case. It is either to much positive camber or a toe issue.
