(2002 S60) HU-803 CD Player "disappeared"

Post by RichCrewe »

The internal CD player in the HU-803 head unit has disappeared from the menu leaving only the AM and FM radio bands. It still allows CDs to be inserted and ejects them so I don't think it's jammed, but I can't select it as a source. This has happened a number of times over the past year, but after leaving the ignition off for a few minutes it has worked again.

I have had a MP3 player connected via the Melbus connection on the back, this appeared as a CD-CHANGER in the source selection and has worked well for about five years. This stopped working at the same time as the CD player. Disconnecting the MP3 player at the MP3 player end of it's cable has had no effect.

Has anyone else encountered these symptoms?

No, I'm afraid not.

It's possible to reset the head unit by removing one of the connectors on the back of it and then reinserting it again.

I did this myself and it would work for a couple of weeks, then fail again. I've now removed the mp3 player and have had to buy a stack of blank CDRs.

I've pulled the mp3 player apart to see what it's made of and it looks to be a SD/USB player chip with a cheap microcontroller to do the Melbus communication. I think the microcontroller is struggling to keep up with the Melbus link and is confusing the head unit

Make sure if you take it out you either do not unplug the ECC disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes before unplugging the ECC.
If I paid attention to signs with little symbols I’d never find anywhere to park.
