Many DIYer are changing AFT frequently, and I often learn from their posts. JRL is best for pointers.

After following the Simple D&F procedure a dozen time on my two cars, I say, a safe refill amount starts with 3 US quarts of freshly opened AFT fluid bottles. Fill slowly -- way slowly than you fill the motor oil.

Now give tranny fluid a workout with normal driving so that the air has escaped and fluid real hot, 150º – 180ºF (place a probe on outer surface of tranny if VIDA is not available). While fluid hot and engine idling take a measurement on the hot side of dipstick and then add no more than 50ml at a time to reach your favorite level.

Each time you add little fluid do a shift cycle between gears.
Wear goggles and gloves for safety.

It really works, and predictable the next time.
I will order my 4th case of MOBIL ATF 3309.

Not wrong, xHeart also has a 2001 V70, which uses 3309 fluid.
Back on topic, I have found that for both of my 1998 S70 and 2005 XC90, with a simple drain and refill, a refill with 3.3 qt is the ticket!
It is dead on every time I check the fluid after the 3.3 qt.

I have done five drain/fills on our 2004 XC70. The drain quantity varies when the car is raised in different ways. I use ramps and then raise the left frame rail (USA drivers side) an additional 4". I drain ~ 3 quarts + 24 ounces with the ATF level correct based on temperature and level chart.

ATF Simple D&F with every other oil change was a good suggestion.
