'98 S70 yellow injector questions

Post by dosbricks »

I was at the Pull-A-Part yard today to check out a '98 V70 that came in last week. When I opened the glove box there were five yellow injectors which were rather grimy on the outside. So I thought, hmm.... maybe this car has had the injectors replaced. The injectors that were on the engine were cleaner in appearance than the ones on my cars, so I pulled them. They cost $34.75 total for all five which is less than one rebuilt one. But whether they were replaced or original is impossible to determine for sure. BTW, the part numbers match for both my cars.

So my first questions are should I have these injectors hydra-statically cleaned and do they need to be attached to a fuel rail to be tested?

Thirdly, my 850 warm starts with a rev which for some time has made me think it might have a couple of leaking injectors. I've used cleaner additives but it still does it. So would it be worth my time to swap these new injectors into it? BTW, my 850 has 159k on it and has had a lot of cold-start short-trip driving. Thanks for any input.

Well, the previous owner either replaced the injectors, and kept the old ones in the glovebox (the yellow ones), or bought the yellow ones to replace the ones in the engine, but never got around to it.

Either way, you have no idea of the status of either set, you can just guess. So you could send out the yellow ones for cleaning, and if they come back good as new, then swap them in.

The removal of the fuel rail is not a fun job, with the inevitable fuel smell permeating everything for a few hours, so I would make sure I have fully functioning ones before taking on the job. By the way, refurbished injectors are $45 from FCPeuro, another option.

The yellow re-man injectors for a 97 850 turbo are on sale at FCP for $40 each just now. But that is each v's $35 for 5 un-known. Guess the question is how much to have them cleaned and tested? At least you will also have to add new seals and filters to your price, which should be included in the re-man's versions. Also re-man have a warranty!

Guess you have to do the math and see what makes sense.

I would guess that the previous owner of the salvaged vehicle replaced them. For some reason people think injectors fail. I believe failure is very rare. There should be a speed shop near you that can hook them up and flow test them for you. No need to have them cleaned unless they are bad or not flowing properly. I see people jumping to the bad injector band wagon every time their car has a misfire. Not sure why.

As for your rev at start, maybe your ECT is bad.

Neil, I readily admitted to my wife that this was an impulse buy, for which I apologized when I got home. After thinking it over though, I liked the idea of having the spares to send out to be cleaned. And in toting it up, now actually looking to save some $$ over the cost of a set of re-man injectors.

Rspi, my better half knows this episode is due to your influence anyway because I have been watching too many Hanging Out with Robert videos where you are hauling out all kinds of parts from the Pick-n-Pull, and I have been infected with this scavenging mindset. So what you are saying is if they flow properly, I could save the cost of cleaning.

BTW, the ECT is new genuine Volvo within the last year. Right now, I'm heading over to your YouTube channel to see if you have a video on how often injectors need to be cleaned/refurbished. Perhaps the S70 is overdue? As you might recall, the 850 does have more pep, but that could be due to my exhaust system. 8)
