I have 2009 XC90 with 3.2 i6 engine. I have the car for little over the year and did just over 8 000 miles. With regards to pros and cons i will compare it to T5 2.5. I was driving Volvo all my life so no idea for other brands.
This engine is paired with 6 speed trans. Given that all the maintenance is done as scheduled I thing it is very reliable. Oils change must be done every 6 months. This engine does not require any other maintenance except oil change. Piston belt and rollers including the water pump must be changed at 124 000 miles. Honestly I am thinking that this interval is too long. Thermostat and timing chain have no service schedule.
Pros:
1. Minimum required maintenance - just oil change and oil filter. I put synthetic always.
2. Engine is quiet and has good power.
3. Highway fuel consumption for this size of the engine and car is very good. In city.... who cares
4. Easy for maintenance. Everything is fairly accessible.
Cons:
1. Repairs could be very expensive but depends what is it. R.E.A.D. for example is very expensive to fix. Lot of labor. It is very uncommon but seems to happen.
2. The engine power could be more.

Flying on 2009 XC90 R-design 3.2L AWD and 2006 XC90 2.5T AWD. Volvo owner forever.
