Wheel Bearing Removal Trick

Post by gameboo »

Just wanted to put this trick I came up with out there in case anyone had difficulty replacing their wheel bearings or needing a machine press when they don't have one. I couldn't get my wheel bearing seals off because the seals were stuck and really didn't want to go to a machine shop, so I made my own shop press using a jack, a socket and another car.
Features the 2000 Volvo!

Attempt at your own risk.

Good luck.

Nice trick when you are on the road with a wheel bearing problem, especially a boat trailer.

Filed for emergencies.

People note that this suits V/S/C70 up to 99 model year and not over as the newer design from 1999 on eliminated separate inner and outer and rear bearings as in pic below: So post is confusing as it mentions a 2000 V70 :) Kudos for ingenuity, though :D

Smart. Could it work on later 2000+ cars? Maybe placing the whole spindle under the car?

Nice, but you can accomplish the same thing using a 3-lb hammer.
- Place the bearing on 2 pieces of wood as you mentioned.
- Then socket + hammer and hammer it out (no need to use another car).

Using a hammer didn't work for me. I wasn't able to generate enough pressure. Also, doing it this way spreads the pressure out evenly so as not to damage things.
The bearing was from an Alfa Romeo, so I'm not sure which Volvo models this might apply to, but it would probably work for other pressed items as well. I would say more for removing things than setting them in place, given the crudeness. I included it b/c I used the Volvo as my press.

I pounded on my 1999 FWB for a couple hours before taking it to a press. Would have loved to have tried this trick

Yeah, as stated very clearly in the opening post, this method will be great for the tough ones.

Moreover, of course there will be many situations that need this amount of force, and/or prefer it to be applied evenly and straight down rather than with a hammer. There are many reasons why the press is such a useful machine tool ... good to be reminded I am driving one around!
