1995 volvo 850 check engine light?

my customers wagon runs fine, but when my customers start the engine it makes a weird sound (the same sound you might here when a UFO zips by in movies)... also, the check engine light comes on and stays on throughout the duration of my customers trip... any ideas on what could be wrong?...
