Once again I seek the collective wisdom.
Right rear bearing has had a low howl for a few years but has gradually shifted to a low growl. I pulled the rotor yesterday and now I can also feel a faint roughness on rotation but no real side to side play, so I'm not looking at this as an emergency repair. The car is only driven locally.
The lowest price I could find on Volvo OE was $159. I found a Timken for $128 + shipping. SKF and FAG would be good except not sure if what I've found are actually authentic--not a knock off.
My local Pull-A-Part has a 2000 S70 which was in nice condition before it got bumped on the nose. I can't determine mileage because of no battery in any of these cars. So an OE hub would cost $14.50 if I pull it. My question is how often do these rear bearings go bad? (for reference, my wife's S70 has 226k), and would this be worth the effort to save some cash?

Double check that the part number is the same.

Abscate, '94 850 to '00 appears to be the same if it is FWD--OE part# 271795
Cn90, I saw that thread, and the Op links to his Moog bearing further down--it goes to Amazon which now lists the origin as China. This stuff is in constant flux.

I did this on an old car of mine, a Maxima. I grabbed two (just in case) for <$20, where a new bearing would have cost me $100 and a trip to a shop to remove the old bearing from the hub and press the new one on. The "new" bearing I installed was smooth as butter.kahl wrote:With 11 of the 850s or V70s in the past 20 years we have not had to change out a rear wheel bearing. I would have no problem pulling a serviceable assembly from a yard.
You can often identify a bad bearing by listening for a grinding or clicking noise as you turn it, or feeling for slop as you push it around radially. If you feel any of that, find another bearing. Still no guarantee, but it ain't a bad bearing that puts the average 850 in a junkyard. Based on what kahl says, most of the 850/*70 rear wheel bearings in any given yard are probably fine.

I have still never had to replace any wheel bearings on a P80 car, front or rear. I would not hesitate for a second to grab/use one from the yard, especially a decent looking rear one from an 00.

I had to do both FWB of my 1999... One at 150k, one at 170k. FWD car, wonder if that's different?
One bearing felt a bit different after removal, the other did not.
I think the JY route is prudent. Grab extra ABS sensor while there.
Btw..see Alex Johnson post below..he had trouble pressing hub out of carrier on the RWB, it needs a special support

Dosbricks: Seeking same.
After noticing both rear hub bearings are very tight, I decided to do some searching. Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd add to yours and the collective wisdom.
According to Timken's site, HA597957 is the correct rear hub for a 98 v70 s70.
Amazon: $153
RockAuto: $119
1A Auto: $180
JC Whitney: $150
Parts-Geek: $135
Stock-wise: $129. (<< Correction: They do have the rear). They also carry the front HA594181 for $91.
AutohausAZ: No joy
RMEuro: No joy
FCP: No joy
Gave up after too many screens trying to find a SKF number....geesh.
Ditto for FAG...only front hubs found. OOPs wait a minute....finally finally found the correct link: http://schaeffler.opticatonline.com/sea ... =5&fa_2=30. According to this: http://schaeffler.opticatonline.com/par ... 2=30&ctx=1, the correct rear hub part number for FAG is 101207.. Fleabay has one for $175...HA! Obviously not widely distributed...nor even made.
Don't know anything about the quality of National, MTC, Optimal, GMB, FEQ, WJB, QB, Centric, Beck-Arnley, Mev-o-tech, Dura, DTA, Pro-force or Moog. (Wow that's quite a list.)
Next time I'm in the JY, I'll have to check some rears hubs. That's a good idea actually!
Actually, I could have saved myself a HUGE amount of time by doing just that......

I understand that for the Rear Bearing (FWD models), it is most often sold as a complete unit (as a hub) for $110-$130 price range.
However, I have seen many websites (rmeuropean, eeuroparts dot com) list the stand-alone bearing as shown below.
Has anyone here replaced ONLY the bearing itself? Obviously, if you go this way, you need a press and appropriate adapters to remove the old bearing and install the new one.
