2001 S80 intermittant starting issue

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2001 S80 intermittant starting issue

Post by Chris30537 »

I have a 2001 S80 with an intermittent starting issue. I've taken out the starter and had it bench tested...it was fine. I then got stuck again and finally put a new starter in to eliminate the obvious. That didn't fix the issue either. When I say it won't start the engine won't even turn over. One interesting thing I noticed is that when I put the key in and turn it to the on position, before engaging the starter, if it's not going to start there is no dash indicator as to what gear (P, N, R, D, etc) the car is in. I am thinking this could possible be my park/neutral start switch going bad. Any suggestions or opinions???

It sounds like an ignition key/tumbler issue to me. In my S70 I had to replace the entire mechanical part (fitted to my key etc.) to solve this problem. Try jiggling your key in the ignition switch and see if that works. That ignition piece creates all kinds of havoc on many electrical parts including gas pump etc... anyway, it seems like a classic problem you probably don't see as much with the newer S80's but may see in your model year and earlier.

Thanks...it hasn't "not started" since the last incident, but I am certain it will happen again. I will focus on the ignition key area and let you know how I fare.
