2000 V70 XC - upgrading it to a high pressure turbo
Hello I own a 2000 Volvo V70 x/c AWD it has 185,000 Miles on it. I was given this car by a family member who bought it from a used car lot. I love this car it is very fun to drive. But unfortunately I have come to learn that this car has never had any key components replaced or serviced. For one my turbo is slowly starting to fail. I know that this car came equipped with a low pressure turbo I was thinking of actually upgrading it to a high pressure turbo. Does any one know it its as simple as just switching out the turbos or would I need to make any changes to my ECU or ETS.

Hey!
There are lots of things you can do to up your performance that are within the limits of your original mapping/ecu programming. Swapping in a bigger turbo, however, is not one of them. If you're putting in a new one of the same size, then that shouldn't be an issue, but like abscate says, it's not a small job, and is usually done - at least on your model - when the engine is out for whatever reason.
Get in touch with iPD (ipdusa.com) and talk to those guys - they have good products and lots of positive feedback on performance tuning.

You do not need to swap an engine to upgrade turbos. The important part is that you pick a power goal and stick with it.
Swapping a turbo is done often and Lucky at www.ardideas.com can reprogram your ecu for it. Have a chat with him " Robert Arnold " first and you can decide on if your goals are within your current turbo or if you will need to change injectors, turbo, exhaust, cam timing etc?
The motor on your car ,given its in good shape, can take more power than your trans and AWD will comfortably . Unfortunately, you are starting with a car you say was not serviced properly. If its weak due to wear I would drive it to work, forget modding it, and work overtime to save up for a well cared for car. If its a second car you can rip it apart and build it up but depending on how bad it is you might be better suited with a better car.
If you want to share compression test numbers , results of the glove test and pictures of the top and bottom of engine and turbo , many will chime in with advice.
Wish you were closer - we could put it up on the rack and see how bad it really is.
Best Wishes,
John

In real world, if the car is properly serviced, turbo is replaced or rebuilt, and the adaptive driving is pushed to agressive, the car will be pretty peppy. Maybe even faster off the line than my pre-ETM T5.
Not to many people really get into cars post 60 mph often. Just my 2 cents.

HPT engine is lower compression, would not want hpt and high pressure engine.
Would prob need 95 octane to alleviate the pinging!
Or timing would need to be adjusted, that would defeat the purpose!

Before you get too wrapped up in a different turbo,
I'd suggest researching "stage 0" for this car and make
a list. Start with the basics and get all of the less
flashy, but truly neccessary things taken care of.
Timing belt, water pump, motor mounts, suspension, etc.
It ain't sexy, but if you're gonna keep the car, I'd start there.
