used torque wrench to 100lbft, didn't feel like much pressure at all

Post by qwertyjjj »

Just took the wheels off and I had to use a long metal pipe over the 18" breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts.
Whereas, when I put the wheel back on, I set it to 100 lb/ft and only had to put a little bit of body weight before it clicked.
Does this seem normal? It was nowhere near as tight as they were before.
What's a standard amount that you have to "lean on" the wrench for this kind of torque?

Some garages over tighten thinking cars be ready to run Nascar.

Surely no need to 'lean' all body weight on the handle. Depends how long the handle is, standard one I think it's 1 ft. Trust your torque wrench.

Breaker bar was 18" and couldn;t undo the lug nuts.
Torque wrench is the standard 12" - barely had to lean at all.

The amount you describe to remove was WAY too much. You would never be able to get those off with the included tools for changing the spare.
100 ft-lb with a 15 inch long torque wrench would seem very low compared to what you had to do to remove the overtightened lugs.

I had the same experience with my local euro auto shop. They tighten the lug nuts so much that I was afraid of breaking my breaker bar. My favorite tire shop OTOH tightens the nuts about the same as I do at home at 100 ft-lb, which shouldn't feel that much with both hands on the torque wrench.

I believe the Volvo spec for lug nuts is 80 ft lbs for dry, unlubricated threads. I lubricate mine and tighten to 60 ft lb

With a 12 inch wrench, ( one foot) you need to apply 100 lbs of force to achieve 100 ft lbs of torque.

If you tighten them with your foot, you are probably over tightening them.

Manual says 100 lb ft for a 2004 V70.
The newer models are 130 lb ft.

shop put them on with an impact and over torqued them.
This is why you couldn't get them off with the factory wrench.
If you're putting them on with a 12" torque wrench it doesn't take anything more than putting your weight on it to get 100 ft lbs.

Well I learned something today for my P2

My P80 is 80 ft lbs

My P2 is 100 ft lbs

Looking at ViDa, says 20 nm first round, then 140 nm for final. That equates to 14 ft/lbs first criss-cross, then 103 ft/lbs second go-around. Personally, I double check torque again after I do the final. Says same for the 2004 V70.
