So I've found a local 2001 XC70 with a great body and interior for less than $300. Ad says "needs repair"
I texted the seller to ask what was up with the car. Replies that it has a major leak, clunky passenger side front CV, dead battery and sunroof rattles. The transmission was working fine prior to the oil issue. At this price, it seems like a good pickup. I could either fix the oil issue and CV, put in a new battery and give it a good once over and use the XC70. Or, I could pull the transmission from this one and put it into my otherwise great condition V70 FWD and rebuild the V70 trans as time and money allow.
So, any predictions on what the "major oil leak" on the 2001 XC70 might be? First thoughts I had were turbo return oil line or oil cooler. Seller reports it runs fine, doesn't smoke and starts right up, but leaks enough that I wouldn't make it home as-is.
Picking up a cheap XC70 with "oil leak." Any predictions?

Could be the RMS or PCV blockage blowing out all the engine seals. Can't speculate really. Need to look and see.

If it "won't make it home" my money is on RMS. Likely resulting from pcv neglect. If you're thinking of pulling the transmission it should be of little worry. Realistically what else could it be? Damaged sum perhaps?

Missed out on the car as it took too long to line up a trailer and get to the car. May be for the best as I have my hands full with a transmission rebuild on my 01 v70 t5 as-is.
