850 immobilizer fun

Post by Logan360 »

Hi all. I've browsed through some of the forum threads and come to nothing that matched my situation. So, here goes.

I have an 855 T5 and an 854R.

I lost my only key to my wagon about 6 hours down the country or so, so no hope of getting it back. I have been cannibalising the 850R to try get it going.

I've it already has the 210/211 relay, I've swapped both computers and hung the R key in the R transponder hoop which I've switched over too.

So the wagon has both computers, transponder hoop and the key from the R.

It will crank and struggle to fire, and every now and then it will fire then die.

My R has been a barstard child ever since I've got it in the form of issue after issue, but I've not struck this before.

Does anyone have any suggestions by chance? If I can't get it running it becomes a parts car, and it's just too nice for that.

My math teacher used to ask me why I would always make my work so hard, when the solution could be had relatively simply.
So, why not just get a new key from Volvo?

You actually need to mate your immobiliser ecu with it's key. That said....immobiliser and key swap from the SAME car.
No need for relays or ecu swap IF both cars have chipped keys.Up to '99,these cars are not mated with their ecu(s).'99 and later are totally different.

New key and coding cost more than the car did, plus I live down a long narrow driveway and it has the steering lock on, so I'm kinda fucked on that front :(

The car was running perfectly fine before I went away, so I'm ruling out the CAS and CPS. would they have failed in an overnight period?

Please refrain from using bad language at MVS.
There may be plenty of it on the net these days,
but this is not one of those places. Thank You.

850 keys coded to the car? How does that work as they are not chipped? Is it through the ignition key barrel in some way? If that is the case, I can't believe that if you use a key and barrel it is for on any car it won't work.

Dealer can get you the correct key from the VIN# assuming the car has never had a complete ignition barrel change in its life.

All your posts look like little poems - I keep expecting them to rhyme. ;)

I have the same question as Neil - 850 keys aren't chipped, so in theory, if you don't want to get a new key, couldn't you just swap the barrel from the
other one in, and use the keys for that one?

Volvo has different security systems in different world markets.
The 850 had a couple of options that don't really appear too often
in the states. The transponder based immobilizer with chipped keys,
fuel ( or is it ignition? ) cutoff and their two stage "deadbolt" locks
seem pretty popular outside of the US - Stateside, not so much.

Here, we usually got keyless entry, and a pretty basic alarm with a horn,
flashing parking lights and a starter cut relay. There were also glass breakage
detectors and a level sensing anti-towing/jacking option, but they didn't get
much much play in the American market.

Couldn't really tell you what NZ got on the 850's, but it sounds like he's got
the premium package. I'd agree that it shouldn't need any programming if
all of the smart parts travel from one rig to another. FWIW, the transponder
ring is just an antenna, so that part shouldn't be "married" to anything.

As to the OP's issue? It's probably code readin' time...

Yes...european 850(s) have chipped keys from '96.
Keys are mated only with immobiliser ecu under the steering column.
