OBD Computers-- Is this possible?

Post by viper69 »

I have a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT non-turbo

I also have a 2002 Nissan Maxima GLE

Does anyone know if I can buy one OBD computer, or will I need to buy 2? There are a lot of models and features etc, and I don't know which one would be the one to get, IF this is possible. I suspect it's not.

Im basically looking for a computer of my own so I can avoid the diagnostics fee at the mechanic etc.

The 95 will be the challenge. Things were still pretty proprietary then. Look at some of the threads referencing PC software and Vol-FCR cables. The Nissan should be easy.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

There is no need to buy anything to read all the codes in the Volvo.

Thanks- I'm aware of the little box with the flashing LEDs. Isn't there an additional computer for 1995 models? I must be mistaken..

Most of the '95 models had full OBD-II and OBD-I. Any common scanner will pull the powertrain codes if it has an OBD-II port under the coin tray. For stuff other than the standard engine codes like ABS, SRS, etc you can get to those through OBD-I or with VOL-FCR.
