Hi gentlemen, I just took my 2000 V70 n/a off the jack stands and out of my barn. I'm working with my grandson to get it back on the road, so he can use it for his senior year. Everything seems fine, new exhaust, pad and rotors, tuned up and a complete fluid change. Looks good, runs great. One problem, the dreaded abs and traction control lights are on. I bought a new (rebuilt) abs module from eEuroparts, no change. Not knowing if I have an active brake system or passive one, I tried isolating the wheel sensors. Both front wheel sensor read app 1600 ohms. Both back sensors read open. I picked up the rear ones at eEuroparts. I tried to read them before I installed them, still read open. I'm guessing I have an active system, but have not figured why I got a 1600 readings on the front wheels. Is it also possible that it is the transmission sensors, if so, which one? I have two, one directly under the abs module and one towards the front of the car, on top of the transmission that connects to a gang connector. Is it possible to test them?

This has been a fun project and spending time with my grandson. always a plus, but we are both anxious to get the car on the road. Thank you

Since you have a rebuilt module I suppose we can rule that out although that is the usual suspect. I don't know who rebuilds the modules for eEuroparts and some rebuilders are better than others but they have typically been tested before they ship.

One thing to double and triple check and that is the large connector on the module. That connector has a nasty habit of not seating properly and the connector will not be drawn in all the way when the hood is folded down.

Beyond that a VIDA/DICE scan can help to isolate the fault but there isn't much more you can do without a DICE unit.

I would skip anything else and go straight to pulling the abs codes.

Thanks for the information gentlemen. I went to your website Matty and read that you can read the abs codes on my original module? My Foxwell only gives me the VSS A code, so I will be sending my original module to you for reading and repair. thanks again.

I'll defer to Matty on this one but on the older (pre-99) cars you could read the ABS codes with VOL-FCR and a VAG-COM cable. There are some other fancier scanners that could get to them as well.

When I got my '99, which is a CAN bus car, I plugged in the VOL-FCR setup and lied to it by telling it that the car was a '98. Not only could it not read any codes but it managed to corrupt the ECU and the car wouldn't run. I had to get the ECU identity cloned into another module to resolve it.

The moral to the story is that you need to be careful about what you use as a scanner. The cars are equipped to read the basic powertrain codes with a standard OBD-II scanner but there is much more detailed information when you use the VIDA/DICE setup. You can also get into trouble trying to read some of the other proprietary codes with the wrong scanner as I found out. I bought my VIDA and DICE clone a couple of years ago and I think the prices may have come down but at the time it was around $120.00 for the package. The rub is that it will tell you everything about a post '99 Volvo but it is worthless for any other car. There is a whole forum dedicated to VIDA and DICE and it gets updated fairly frequently on the units that work and the ones to avoid.

Matty can tell you what scanners will work to read the codes.
