First I would like to say hello and I am new to the forum. I have been searching the forums looking for a clear answer as to how I should correctly wire a new Bosch ignition coil (not Regina) on my 1987 Volvo 740 turbo wagon. I recently purchased the car for $200 and had it brought home on a flatbed. The ignition coil is missing and there are 3 wires standing there (plus the coil wire coming from distributor as the 4th wire). I have included pics.
1 wire is red/white
1 wire is covered in black tape so I am not sure of original color.
1 wire is white/creme and is coming from a little grey box mounted on the passenger side strut tower. I haven't the slightest clue what that thing is. (Have looked through my chitons manual also)
And of course the coil wire, but I know where it goes lol
Seeing as how my Volvo came without an ignition coil, I don't have a clear answer as to how the wires go back on the new coil correctly (I noticed a positive and negative side on the new coil)
If anyone could assist me I would be very grateful! Hopefully the attached pictures are of some help!

Turn key switch on, and find the hot wire, and place it on + side of coil.Cheyenneholdings wrote:1987 Volvo 740 turbo
Put other two wires on negative side of coil.
Use a coil that was designed for your Volvo...

Thank you very much for the prompt reply. I have a 6-12v circuit tester. I turned the key on as instructed and attempted to test the metal pieces (connectors?) at the ends of the 3 wires. The test light never lit up. Am I possibly using an incorrect tester? Or do I need to actually pierce the wire with the tester to accurately check it? Also, I grounded the clamp to the fender, is that acceptable?

That appears to be spam link as it jammed up my iPhone with trying to load 4-5 different ad's at once.

It's not spam. Maybe your phone doesn't like the link. No problem using the link with my desktop computer.Cheyenneholdings wrote:That appears to be spam link as it jammed up my iPhone with trying to load 4-5 different ad's at once.
Red-White (coil terminal 1) wire goes to powerstage pin 1.
Blue (coil terminal 15) goes to powerstage pin 4 and fuses 12 and 13
My 1988 760 Turbo Wagon which has same EZ117K ignition system has this:
2 each red/white wires connected using one female spade terminal to coil.
1 each blue wire connected to the other terminal.

I just attempted to open the link with my PC and it opened a page with naked Latino women!! Could someone perhaps screenshot what it is I need to see at that link. It is too much of a coincidence for all of my devices to be redirecting me to unusual/unethical places!! I just need help with the coil on my Volvo.
At this point am considering just hooking the wires up and seeing what happens. If I hook the new coil up wrong will it ruin it? Is just 3 wires someone has to have a picture or be able to tell me wether I can test the metal connectors with my test light or do I need to pierce the rubber wire cover with the test rod to get an accurate test?

I just posted what info you need due to you having issues with the link. Do you have the coil bracket that attaches the coil to the strut tower brace?
Another link that shows location of the coil mounting and the coil terminals:

Ok I see it now. That sort of makes sense.
So if I understand correctly, the red/white wire and the creme colored wire go to the positive terminal on the new coil? And the black wire that should be blue goes on the negative side of the coil?
I have no idea what power stage pins are.... Are they they prongs on the new coil? And if so, how do I know which is which as none seem to be labeled??

The ignition powerstage is also known as an ignition module. For future reference the powerstage is attached to an aluminum heat sink on the drivers side inner fender near the battery.Cheyenneholdings wrote:Ok I see it now. That sort of makes sense.

Terminal 15 (blue wire) connects to the ignition switch. That would be the coil positive side. I can'd find a cream colored wire connecting to the coil in any of the wiring diagrams. Maybe trace the cream colored wire to it's other end, maybe it has been spiced into another color wire.
