03 s60 Speedo & Tach will not return to Zero

Post by flyblackhills »

Hey guys -

I just picked up a 2003 s60 T2.4 over the weekend...on the test drive it was running rough, and pulled hard to the right when driving it. Popped the hood and saw a tear in the main vacuum line coming off the intake, replaced those lines for $3.70, and aired up the front right tire - purrs like an s60 should, and goes straight down the road like it should. I picked it up to back up to my 01 s60 non-turbo that's pushing 285K mi. The 03 only has 185K on it!!

The other minor mechanical issues with it aren't a big deal - but the annoying issue I'm seeing is the speedometer and tachometer do not return to zero. They are both sitting at about the same point above zero. Speedo at 10mph, and tach at 500rpm. Sitting still, engine off.

While running, they appear to cycle normally and both read about that same variance from key off. While idiling, tach shows about 1500 rpm. The speedo is high about 12-15 mph while driving according to cell phone GPS (Ulysses GPS app has a cool heads up display that reflects off the windshield btw). I haven't checked the odometer to see if it's counting correctly.

I reset the ECU tonight using the battery disconnect method thinking there was a residual "zero" in the display circuitry...but no change.

I read somewhere that the reset on this was to pull the needles off and reset them on the pin...Has anyone attempted this? Or is there any other thoughts that could cause this strange anomaly?

If not, I suppose I can live with this $1500 investment and it's little quirk.

Thanks!

being a 2003 it is perhaps not the original speedometer. it is not that hard to remove the DIM from there, fight a little with the tabs to remove the front clear plastic cover then look at the needles. The battery is disconnected while the DIM is out

Oragex - Thanks for the tip and link! (I should get that guy to build me an anodized panel!! They look great) Great instructions on there!!

Not sure on repair history on this gem - but you may very well be correct on not original speedo. It's just odd that they are both off the pin the same distance.

I'll pop off the cover and move the needles! I've got to get it changed, because my kids are already given me crap about driving "way too fast"....

If they say: "Daddy, I'll puke..." it's not the needles ;)
