Dash/ front speaker removal- broken speaker mag / impedance

Post by steve »

While removing the glove box to access the fan blower motor I noticed that the magnet on the right front dash speaker had come off and was laying amongst the various wiring harnesses.

I want to remove the dash to replace both front speakers. I have seen the dash cluster removal procedure over on Bay 13 and was wondering what additional steps needed to be done to gain access to the right side of the dash. Bay 13 stops at the left side to gain access to the instrument cluster only. I do not want to break anything.

Can anyone help??

Why do you want to remove the dash? All you need to do is to pop off the speaker covers and you'll have access to the speakers.

Take some strong adhesive and glue the magnet back on the bottom of the coil. Mine did this some years ago on my 850 and gluing it back restored the speaker and it sounded no different than the other side.

Geeze, I had no idea I could just remove the panel above the speaker. I will have to try it. It looks like it can't be removed though.

I had the same problem with the rear speakers having the magnet fall off. Glue would not hold for any length of time so I had to use glue and a tywrap (ziptie) to keep it on. Sounds fine.

Thanks,

I will let you know if I am successful in removing them with out tkaing the dash apart.

Yup, I've got a '93 and all I did was to pop the grills off the dash with a small screwdriver. No screws, they're held in by friction.

I was able to pop out the right side grill cover for the dash speaker with no trouble. Thanks for the advice.

NOW I have another problem. The center dome of the cone is crushed and the paper of the cone itself is disintegrating. No I did not do it.

I need a replacement speaker, probably for both sides based on the condition of the right side. After market would be ok as Volvo is probably too $$$$.

Problem is I have never seen a speaker assembly like this and I do not think that an aftermarket speaker will fit.

HELP

I contacted Erie and they do not have them available. Neither does Groton.

The dealer will sell me a new one for $95.00 each.

Any other suggestions for a source??

I had the same problem when I got my car and was able to land a set from Ebay. Other than that, I've heard that with a little work, you can fit a set of 3.5" speakers in there. Actually, why not throw a set of tweeters (with a bass blocker) in the dash? I think that's all they were in the first place. You can take the old speakers off the mounting plate and rig up something for aftermarket ones.

I am a new owner of a Volvo 850. I have not reviewed stereo wiring diagrams.

Check the ohms rating of your OEM factory speakers. If your door/dash speakers are 8 ohms, do not simply replace with aftermarket 4 ohms speakers.

When door/dash speakers are wiring together in a parallel circuit, the ohms resistance at your stereo amplifier still must be greater than 4 ohms.

Ohms Law for parallel circuits.

8 ohms door speaker and 8 ohms dash speaker

1/8 + 1/8 = 1/Total_R
1/4 = 1/Total_R
Total_R = 4 ohms
--> Stereo Amp will run cool

8 ohms door speaker and 4 ohms dash speaker

1/8 + 1/4 = 1/Total_R
3/8 = 1/Total_R
Total_R = 8/3 (or 2.67 ohms)
--> Stereo Amp does not receive sufficient resistance -- will run HOT.
