Door Latch Assembly

Post by SeattleVolvoGuy99 »

I have a 1998 v70 S/W AWD that has a door latch assembly that needs to be replaced. Do you guys know what other years and models of Volvo will have a door latch assembly that I can interchange the part? Is there a website I could look that up on? Thanks for the response.

Asked and answered in your previous post:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=77704

It was also pointed out that if you describe the problem,
we might be able to help you get it fixed without having
to buy any parts. So what's the problem with the locks?

If it's just a case of some doors not locking or unlocking,
that's a pretty common problem and we've got answers.
If it's an actual latch problem, take a minute and describe it.
We may have some help - That's what this forum is all about.

Ok. My apologies. I love working on my newly acquired Volvo but I don't know the names of many of the parts or even tools necessary when doing those repairs so I find it difficult to describe the mechanical situations that arise and I feel like an idiot. But I will attempt it...haha. So about a week ago I put the key in the driver's door and turned it (fairly hard) twice to the right. I think I may have bent the laser cut (but without a computer chip) key a little bit too. All 5 doors unlocked but I also heard a loud crack. I start to pull the key out and it wouldn't come out...no matter how much I tugged on it and swore at it. It was stuck half way between the neutral key position and the "all-5-doors-unlock" position...so about 2 o'clock. On top of that, the latch had positioned itself so that the driver's door would not latch. I left the car in frustration and it sat for about an hour. When I came back I was able to get the key out....but the locks seemed to be screwed. The drivers door would not lock but I could still turn the key in the key slot of the DD to the right slightly (but not at all to the left) and the electric lock actuator would trigger the other 4 doors to unlock. The drivers door deemed to still maintain command over the other doors.

My buddy, who's a car buff, opened up the door panel to try to address the issue of the drivers door not locking. I should also mention that the locking knob that goes up and down dependent on the lock status was loose and showed signs that it would fall into the door. My buddy was able to get the DD to lock manually and get the locking knob to be more stable and to actually function. But it will no longer, however, open with the key. After he was done, none of the locks would open either by the master switch or the key in the door. When I lock the door, I have to do it manually. To unlock the door, I have to go through the back hatch because the hatch has the only working lock at this point.

So that's it in a nutshell. Come at me with any questions. Thank you.

After you removed the key, all the doors would unlock with the key, but after your buddy worked on the lock and tightened things up, the key no longer unlocks the doors. Maybe a loose connection while working on the switch.
Also check you hatch wires. It sounds crazy, but it does have function with the door locks.
Working before buddy, not working after buddy. What did buddy do?
This forum is here to help and will respond. Sometimes we/they/us need to figure out the idea before the solution.

What Buddy did has yet to be determined. I've been texting and calling, trying to get an answer out of him and no resolution yet. He was more of an acquaintance actually. He just knew that I was very concerned about not having the driver's side door in working order so he loosened and tightened and came up with a quasi-functioning DD that locked when done so on the inside but serves no other purpose as it stands now. He may very well have loosened a connection. I just don't know which one it would be be. The power windows and electric side mirrors still have juice to them. Does that help?

There are several parts of the door latch and locking assembly.
The lock cylinder, the lock button and the latch itself. The latch
also has the lock motor and several switches built into it. One of
the switches detects the mechanical lock and unlock inputs from
the key cylinder, one let's the car know if the door is open or not
and a completely seperate set of switch contacts turns on the red
safety light in that particular door.

The cylinder, button and latch are connected by metal rods.
It sounds like something was sticking and you may have broken
one of the levers that the rods are connected to. Hopefully, it's
just one of the little plastic clips that connect the rods with the
levers, but you may have bent a rod or broken something else.
You'll have to dig into it to find out.

If you can mess around with one that works, that would help out
with understanding how it's suupposed to work. Maybe at a junkyard?
If you can do that, pics and maybe some video could be useful.

Another thought might be to disconnect the cylinder from the latch
and see how it works by itself. Isolating the parts and checking them
out individually can answer a lot of questions.

And you probably already know this, but get a remote fob.
With a '99, it won't be cheap, ( You'll need a brand new one
and a dealer will have to program it into the car...) but it'll
make all the stuff that's broken now last a lot longer!
And it's just plain cooler. ;)
