Possible ETM problem
I just replaced head gasket on my 2000 s70 non turbo and it started and ran fine when job was complete I took it out for a spin a nd seemed fine. I put it back in garage and the next day it started fine but would not accelerate. I thought maybe was a vacuum problem at first but then I ran across info on the ETM and was wondering if this could be the problem, do ETM's go like bad fast like that I didn't notice any signs of throttle issues, is there a way to troubleshoot the ETM, or do I just replace and hope that's it. Also I read that they need to be programmed...are they programmed to a specific model or vehicle itself, I plan to buy one on ebay so if its model specific it should already be programmed is that correct....Just reaching out for some advice

Switch ignition to PosII and listen for the ETM making a whining noise. You can remove the rubber plenum to the ETM so you can hear it better and see the flap moving to closed when it clicks shut.
It should make that noise for about 8 secs and then shut down with a click. Also with ign in Pos II and ETM making noise you can see the flap moving when you press the accelerator. I usually locate the ETM to sit on top of the spark plug cover for testing while I operate the throttle pedal or get a helper to tell you if the throttle flap is moving but remember you only have 8 secs to view it.
If you hear nothing check the ETM relay under the pear shaped cover in the engine bay and see if any fuses are blown. Also with ign in Pos II unplug the ETM connector and test for voltage with a test light or meter at the thick green wire (12V+) and thick brown wire (-Chassis)
Finally if you're certain that your car has voltage at the connector and ETM is dead you can look into sourcing another ETM and YES they are programmed to your car's ECM software version so a second hand unit may not match unless it has been taken from a car with the same ECM version (from a S70 or V70 2000 model non turbo) but even then you have about a 1 in 3 chance of a match

well prior to getting your reply I tapped on ETM and you could feel it idle better and then the car would accelerate but would only last a minute or so....so I assume the ETM is bad...as far as programming is that something that could only be done at a dealer or should I take my chances ordering one until I get one that matches ....hopefully that will happen on first one.

If tapping on it makes a difference there's a chance the throttle plate is stuck on debris in the throat of the ETM so a removal and a good clean may help.
By just removing the rubber tubing leading to the ETM you can manually push the flap fully closed so you can feel if it's binding.
You need to match at the dealer in many cases however as stated above find one from the same model, year and aspiration (turbo or non turbo) will increase the chances of a match. It doesn't matter if it's from an S70 2000 or a V70 2000 as long as it's from the same transmission type.
