06 Xc70 cabin blower motor options

Post by scot850 »

Car was at the dealer for annual service (car has about 85,000 miles) and they said that the blower motor is noisy and quoted a stupid price to replace (well over $700 CDN).

I thought that was stupid expensive until I saw the price of the Volvo blower motor (Even from Tasca it is about $400 CDN + shipping). I say on FCP they offer a Behr motor for about $200 US and a TYC for $85 or so.

Have any of you guys got a recommendation on what to buy? We get cold winters here and having heat is important.

I am not used to how long these motors should last on the P2's but do they suffer the same dry bearing issues the P80's have? Is it worth removing the motor and trying to lube the bearings or would that just be a lost cause/short delay before having to replace it?

Repairing the blower is not doable. Tons of used ones on Ebay. Myself got a used one last year, look at the center screw of the blower part, try finding one that's not rusted.

So you are saying that re-lubing the bearings won't help? If that is the case, other than used items, are any of the options I listed in my OP as brands any good relative to the original?

I think I would put that Behr in. The P2 blower replacement is a lot more work than a P80, I've read here. I guess since its has to come out its worth ring the lubrication job and then reconnecting and testing. You can then make the call if you want to do that job again . Ever.

Bad info. All data reports 33 minutes for the blower R/ R. can't be that bad!

You can lube the bearings with your saved engine oil from the other car

Spraying it with some WD40 will help for a while but squeaking and eventual failure is common with P2 blower motors.
Go with aftermarket, no problems, they can't be any worse than the factory ones!!

33 minutes, my rear end. It takes longer

I'd just slap a used one in there and call it a day. Replacing it is pretty simple. Remove a glove box and a few screws and it drops out.

Thanks guys. Read the how to on Vida and doesn't look any harder or more of a pain than P80/850. More or less same need to remove glovebox, undertray, and a couple of bits of trim. The fan itself is a bigger pain as you have to prise the old motor out of the housing. But I take JRL's point on the P2 motors are poorer than P80's. Ill go with the Behr version and be done with it I hope!

Thanks guys,

Neil.

BEHR is OEM. TYC is not bad too, but it does not have rubber pads for noise insulation, so it runs a tad noisier.
