Iced up windshield? Doors frozen shut? Try these...

Post by JimBee »

I don't mind the snow and must say my 93 850 crawls through it quite capably, but when the windshield is caked in ice that's a class V scourge of winter.

This morning it was. Put some windshield fluid in a spray bottle and sprayed up one side, let that set while I sprayed up the other side, then repeated for both sides. It didn't immediately melt through the 3/16" or so of ice which was hard as glass, but after letting it sit for half an hour, it still took a little effort but was pretty easy to scrape through what was left.

The other ice curse is doors frozen to gaskets. Before it got real cold I lightly smoothed some canning wax over the rubber door seal and haven't had a problem yet.

Also, to protect my wiper blades instead of standing them straight up I turn the whole wiper blade around 160 ? degrees on the arm so that only the metal back of the outboard end is touching the glass at an angle. That way the rubber blade can't freeze to the windshield.

Silicone Paste is good for windows and door seals, lightly apply, then up and down with the windows a few times, also to door seals. I understand the excess should be wiped off after a few minutes, supposedly keeps the doors from freezing closed.
