1993 volvo 240 wagon overheating

Post by Skymaster »

!993 Volvo 240 wagon overheating.

I replaced the water pump (Volvo), thermostat 87 DGS,
Radiator nissens, tropical fan clutch, green expansion tank cap,
belts hoses, timing belt and seals, rebuilt Cyl head.
Replaced temp gauges (twice). New temp sending units.

The temperature gauge goes to the red (bottom of red)

Opening the heater to circulate the coolant does not make a difference,
I get hot air inside the car.

I by pass the temperature compensation board, will it have anything to do with it?

I also purchase a Infrared Thermometer to check the temperature of
the engine etc. just did not came in yet.

The engine has new bearings and rings.

the hoses and radiator gets hot.

What I'm missing??????
Help please
Thanks

Still have air in the system? Thermostat should be installed with it's "jiggle valve" at it's highest position.

The best way to check the temperature sensor is by checking it's resistance.

Do you really think it is hot? Does touching the upper hose when it reads in bottom of red make you think you will get instant blister?

SO many thing cause temp gauge issues. Ground issues will often make headlights on vs off change temp gauge.

If you use voltmeter between block and some bolt head on firewall while engine is running and blower motor is on high and headlights on you shoudn't have over 0.3 V reading. If it is higher then use voltmeter between block and the lug on end of ground cable and do the same at other connections and you will find which one is the problem. Ohms testing with Ohmmeter will not find poor connections like that conclusively like V drop testing loaded will.

If V drop is good there then go inside and do the same between ground to cluster and the body of car.

If the temp gauge sensors were available for different temp ratings it would make the gauges more accurate. Hey wait, maybe they are available. At least one Euro car manufacturer was known to use a sensor with a lower temp rating to lower the reading on the gauge (especially oil temp gauges). Just as some Domestic manufacturers were known to use other oil pressure sensors to make the gauge show a higher oil pressure.

I just install a viscous clutch fan and a new (green) expansion tank cap.
Im looking for source of what the engine temps should be t different parts of the engine, like the radiator, hoses, cya head etc. I have ordered a infrared thermometer to check the temps.
I also will install a temperature compensation card to see if it makes a difference. I had a bypass in it.
Thanks you so much for all the suggestions. Please keep them coming.
P.S. I don't give up.
Cheers

Have you tried the IPD shttps://www.ipdusa.com/products/5670/108262-vol ... 62-1363117
Temperature board bypass kit? My 240 1993 wagon kept appearing to be overheating the gauge would swoop up and I would stop the car turn off A/C etc. Put this little item into my car and presto! It stopped. I had already replaced water pump, hoses, had the radiator flushed and nothing worked. This 7.95 part did the job. Hope that helps. Good luck.
