'04 V70 2.4 slow to warm up

Post by mouseskowitz »

I just replaced the engine temp sensor. The check engine light is gone but it doesn't seem like that engine is getting up to normal operating temp all the time. Before replacing the sensor I was thinking it just wasn't reading right. My '02 V70 2.4T seems to get up to temp within a couple miles. Earlier this week the '04 was sitting ~1 hash below mid after almost an hour driving on the highway. The caveat is that the ambient temps where in the single digits F. When I shut the engine off to refuel it dropped a full hash mark. So the question is if I have a thermostat on the way out or does the radiator just work too well at low temps?

If your temperature gauge moves from the mid-position after warmup, something is wrong - probably thermostat.

It's more that it never makes it there. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Can you monitor actual temp with a reader or app?

Are you running defogg AUTO ?
that cycles the aircon which turns on the engine fan, that may cause low temps in extreme cold weather.

Am I remembering right that the engine operating temp should be 90°C?

Yes it should be. You can look for the brand Wahler. That's what I have had in my Volvo for two years, and I have not had any problems.

Check engine light came on today and the computer says the thermostat is going bad. So, I guess that removes the doubt. Hopefully I can do it this weekend. The engine had been off for a couple minutes by the time I got the computer hooked up. It was reading the engine temp at 81C and the gauge was in the middle. It probably took half an hour to get warmed up this morning, but once it did the gauge didn't go back down at all.
