What is this! Behind the wheel?

Post by VolvoBooster »

Hello all!

So I was changing my brakes and rotors, to find a surprise! This surprise is likely the culprit of a slight popping noise on the right passenger's side, when accelerating for the first 45 seconds of driving. It goes away totally while driving or stopping, no matter the speeds. The exception would happen when going over speed bumps, there was a slightly noticeable what I would describe as popping or clicking noise. Anyway, as I was saying, I was changing my brakes and I saw a tear in this rubber in the pictures below. This is my main concern. I've said a little bit more below the pictures.

What is this part called? Also the part it's protecting, what is it called? I see it's near the control arm. It has been torn and there is obvious oil, or something of the sort, with leakage. The car seems to still run fine. There is no check engine light from this.

What's the threat level, what should I repair? Can I just buy the torn rubber, and replace that part? Are there any other dangers or something else I should be aware of?

Thank you kindly!

Replace that axle with a new or reman axle. I do not advise anything else for an option. It's on borrowed time.

It's the boot covering the constant velocity (CV) joint on the front axle shaft

At a minimum it needs to be removed and cleaned out with solvent and then repacked with new CV grease, and a new boot ibstalled

The boot was torn for a long time, CV joint is already dead.

FCPEuro sells GKN branded axles, who is OEM supplier for Volvo. It's expensive, but 30% cheaper than original axle. Don't buy Chinese or axles remanufactured in US, waste of time and money.

If your driving has been in relatively dry conditions its work cleaning and repacking that CV. They let you know when they are toast with lots of noise.

I agree with abscate suggestion.
The grease leakage and spraying on the surrounding area indicates the torn boot is relatively recent so the joint may be okay if not exosed to too much dirt or water ingress.
Try a few full lock turns in a carpark nearby to check there is no clicking sound coming from the joint.
Also check the CV boot on the other side as it may be close to tearing also. If suspect do the boots and repack grease on both sides.

Popping at full turn happens at the outer. Some call it clicking. If its popping its past the repack stage. Replace the shaft

Thanks guys! I don't hear sound on turning, I think I will try repacking it with the grease and Genuine Volvo Boot?
I will try full look turns and see if I hear any sounds? If there are no sounds, should I proceed as I suggested?
Is Vavoline Multi-Purpose grease okay? It says it includes cv joints, but I am reluctant. Should I order CV Joint grease specifically?

Thanks!
