Air compressor R/R

Post by blurat »

Hi all, I have the 2008 XC70 and there is a rattle coming from the a/c pump. I can see the pulley wavering a bit and took a look at removal of the unit.
I cant even see the belt but on top of the pulley.
I am not sure if the pulley wiggles about a mm or so it might be the shaft of the pump itself. I would think tho that the shaft would be leaking something.

That said, is there any information that clearly describes removal of the pump as
A: even to replace the pulley I need to at least dislodge it to gain access and
B: If I need to replace the entire unit who has the most reasonable priced/ reliable piece?

Thanks for any information. In advance, I know to get the fluid removed before cracking any hoses. I just dont see where to start.

OK, so no one knows anything about my xc air.
Im going to take a peek under the car tomorrow, Sunday the 12th, and see if I can get a better view from there. If so, I will just do it myself and take notes for anyone interested. Im not paying 1500 to keep my wife cool.

Usually it's the bearing inside the pulley

Don't know your specific engine, here's what I did on my 2003 S60

OK....The plot thickens. I put the car up on ramps and removed the plastic plate from under. Loosened the screw that holds the air intake from the air cleaner to the filter. Removed the filter tubing and cover so I could get a better view of the compressor.
Wiggled the pulley side to side with a large screwdriver. No play to speak of. However, I can rotate the pulley freely about 50k of an inch without resistance indicating there is radial play at the drive pulley or mechanism that drives the compressor. I cant see below the compressor to get a look at the drive mechanism but that play would be enough to rattle when the air is on.
I would think if I knew how to change the belt I would be able to see what is clanking. Could even be the tensioner, which I also have no clue where it is.
Thanks for the reply oragex but thats much different than my 2008 with 3.2

Im not getting a good read at what you are measuring here.

Air condition drive belt is off, right?

The AC pulley should spin freely with the car off. Is it moving in /out by 1mm?
