Read DTCs ; 2001 V70

Post by malty »

2001 V70 has had intermittent no crank problem. Let it sit for ~15,20,30,60,.. minutes and it would start. Today it stumbled and died near home, I was able to coast into the driveway ; thank goodness. Now it is crank + no start.

I ran through the in car DTC messages ; it's saying DTCs are present for ECM, CEM, DDM, CCM, PDM, UEM.
Went to rent an Innova 3130LAT scan tool from Autozone in hopes of getting the actual codes from those modules listed in the DTC message display.
On the 3130LAT System Menu, the Global OBD2 section just reports "No Powertrain or Freeze Frame Data is presently stored in the vehicle's computer".
Selecting the Volvo OEM Enhanced item on the 3130LAT System Menu gets a message of "OEM Enhanced is not supported for this vehicle".
The 3130LAT I/M Monitors area at the top of the screen has green indicators for MIS, FUE, CCM, CAT, EVA, O2S, HTR.

Is the Innova 3130LAT just a deficient code reader for the Volvo V70 ... or is there something amiss with the OBD2 reporting from the vehicle ?

Let's get a simple reader and just start with the ECM codes

If you have a weak battery all kinds of module errors will pop up. Start with engine first.

Even though the label on the blowmold plastic case for this Innova scan tool says 3130LAT, I guess it is just a 3130e ... which is mostly the model I find referenced on the Innova.com website. I have used this scanner from my local Autozone store to read and clear codes on a 2004 Ford F250 ; it worked fine in that case. Usage instructions are thus :
To Retrieve Codes
  1. Connect the Scan Tool to the vehicle’s test connector.
  • Turn the ignition key "On.” DO NOT start the engine.
  • The tool will automatically link to the vehicle’s computer.
Looks like another MVS subscriber bought one of these Innova 3130e : Re: What OBDII Scanner Should I Get?

So, in this respect of just reading codes I think it is a pretty basic operation even though this scan tool has more features than a 'basic' code reader.

The Innova 3130e user guide has this in the terminology definition section :
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) - The PCM is the OBD2 accepted term for the vehicle’s “on-board computer.”
In addition to controlling the engine management and emissions systems, the PCM also participates in controlling the powertrain (transmission) operation.
Most PCMs also have the ability to communicate with other computers on the vehicle (ABS, ride control, body, etc.).
So, I believe that clarification of Powertrain directly relates to message "No Powertrain or Freeze Frame Data is presently stored in the vehicle's computer" given when trying to read OBD2 DTCs in my Volvo V70. It simply means that it didn't get any DTCs from the PCM (engine / vehicle computer). And, of course this is not intuitive when the V70 message center reports that codes are set in ECM, CEM, DDM, CCM, PDM, UEM.

I will contact Innova to ask if they have an explanation of the non-intuitive behavior.

I think you are right about the mismatch between the car and the code reader report. Please do let us know how that resolves.

The green lights are probably readiness indicators so it does look like it's talking to the car, it just isn't finding the codes.

I keep a cheap reader in each car ..you can find them on eBay used for $10 or so

Eventually learned that Volvo specific DTCs can't be read by most off-the-shelf scan tools / readers.
Still curious what can read Volvo DTCs short of Volvo branded / specific diagnostic tools.

The bottom line is that this V70 had intermittent no-crank issues with no CEL / MIL ... therefore no OBD2 standard codes that could be read by the off-the-shelf Innova 3130LAT / 3130e scan tool.

Every manufacturer has proprietary codes and modules.

Any P code with format P1xyz is a proprietary Code vs OBD standard P0xyz format.

The upper level AUTEL readers , 500 and up , can read most Volvo stuff and modules
