Volvo S70 1998 sputtered to a stop...

My daughter's S70 stalled today. Seems like it doesn't have fuel or spark. She said that she can hear the fuel pump running so I'm thinking the coil has failed. Has anyone ever had one fail while driving?

On our '97 855 GLT, we have experienced three stalls. One was caused by a failed fuel pump and two were caused by a sticking idle air control valve. The coil hasn't failed yet on ours at 192k miles.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

More likely cap/rotor failure than coil, if she can hear fuel pump running ( good situational awareness by the way!)

There is no moving parts in the coil. I had cap/rotor failed while driving before.

Hmm... have her check the coil wire, that may be damaged. I've never heard of a coil failing like that on these cars.
Other than the cap/rotor, it could be sensor related. You would have to check for codes though.

Good to know. It was the fuel pump. (Not sure what buzzing sound she was hearing in her head). SMH

We need to start a poll about how long a fuel pump last. Seems they are time/miles change items.

Your daughter probably heard the idle control motor. Fuel pumps are good to at least 180K, longer if the fuel filter gets changed once in a while. I hope she carries a good fuel pump relay in the glove box, along with a folding torx tool.

I keep a spare relay in mine since I replaced it and it turned out to not be an issue. Might as well keep it in the car, you never know when it'll go out.

I believe she has a jump wire in there. Also has a relay.
