2000 V70 carpet removal question? Topic is solved

I have managed to remove the driver's front seat to clean the coffee spilt by PO down the side of the center console.

When I managed to get the seat out and was vacuuming the crap out I looked forward to the driver's foot well and found a large hole in the carpet to the left of the left foot rest. In all my years at PnP I have never seen wear to that level, and especially not there. The carpet is also worn just behind the right heel behind where the rubber mat stops. Again, no idea how owners manage that as it is hard to get your foot back there even when you have the seat all the way back.

I cannot replace the carpets now, but for future reference how do you remove the front portion and replace it? Is this another of Volvos wonderful designs that requires removing the whole dashboard? Does anyone actually do this, or do you slice the carpet up behind the dash and then tape the split afterwards?

If I decide to keep this car and get rid of the PITA R I may look at doing this. First though I'd have to find a suitable replacement which these days seems hard.

Ive got pictures from my 1999 somewhere but will have to hunt. I had to take the whole carpet out to get all the coolant out of my car in 2013. I think the carpet was easy, the padding had to be cut though.

cutting makes the process easier, if you're strategic about it. be sure to pull the battery before you yank the seats or you'll trigger an SRS light.

I've been through this exercise to deal with a coolant leak. From memory:

Assuming you've taken the steps to remove the driver's seat:

1) Remove the plastic door sill trim
2) Remove the black foot rest from the left front of the foot well. IIRC I think it needs to be pushed upwards along the carpet surface.
3) Remove the knee bolster taking care to disconnect the courtesy light.
4) You should now be able to start to move the carpet. Slide it towards the rear over the underseat heat vents. Pull the edges of the carpet from under the console. Take care to slide it over the hood release handle. No need to make any cuts.

Clean replacements show up frequently at the scrap yards here in the south, but we don't have to deal with the salt & snow that y'all have up north.

Kranz is correct, no cutting required. The plastic foot rest is a pain to remove. It does slide but I thought it slid down to come off, I used a hammer to get it to move about 1/4 inch, and then it lifts off. You will need to remove the seat to make removal and installation easier, but you can leave the seat in the car, just tilt it back so it rests on the rear seat.

Before you put the new carpet in your car, wash it and let it dry in the sun. You can use Simple Green and a scrub brush, and then rinse it well with a hose.

The plastic foot rest will come off if you push it up, but all the pins will break.

you need to slide it down to pull if off intact. JB weld fixes it, though.

Just to echo: push down on the plastic foot rest, not up. Lots of good tips here.

One easy way to remember is that taking it off, it slides in the opposite direction
of the way your foot would be trying to push it up through the firewall if, just say,
you were bracing for dear life in a slideways drift or perhaps preparing to slam into
something unexpectedly, with a sinking feeling that it probably won't end well - Simple!

Oh me and the foot rest have come up against one another before! I even have a spare in the garage from the 850 project last year. As it was on back order I went to PnP and after breaking 3 I got one off. Discovered (If I recall correctly) you have to raise it slightly at the bottom to unlock a tab, and then it slides down as described. I was only successful because the one that I didn't break was not fitted fully home!

Now I just have to find a LH front carpet and a rear carpet in good condition! Mind you it will have to wait until I can drive again!

Thanks for all the input guys! I had a look at Vida parts again, and found the carpet section, and you are all correct, in that the front section is split left and right, so easy to replace, except for the foot rest issue!!

My impression has been that the dead pedal can slide up or down into place, and it tends to slide up because that's where your foot pushes it.

I've got one I picked out of a junkyard recently that I'll take some photos of and post here.
